To recharge the body and mind basically. Especially in kids sleep is very important because they do most of their growing then. In adults etc. the need for sleep is based upon chemical processes in the body that need that down time.

God didn't create us. We are organic beings evolved from primordial organisms. Just like the badger, the stoat or the alligator, etc. And they need sleep too.
