Suppose you want to send in the mail a valuable object to a friend. You have a box which is big enough to hold the object. The box has a locking ring which is large enough to have a lock attached and you have several locks with keys. However, your friend does not have the key to any lock that you have. You cannot send the key in an unlocked box since it may be stolen or copied. How do you send the valuable object, locked, to your friend - so it may be opened by your friend?

well i just assumed that there's no more room in the box for one more key

so, you send the box w/ the object and a lock attached and locked. then your friend attachs another lock (one of his own) and sends it back to you. then you remove your lock and send it back to your friend. then they can open the box w/ their own key

I can ask my friend to send his own lock to me with a duplicate key. Then I can send my expensive object with that lock. I need not send the key since my frined already has the key.

There can be various other methods as well... like I can use a combination lock with number as key or I can use a highly sophisticated lock with a password (which the friend knows) or I can insure the object before sending, so that in case of theft I can get the money from insurance company...

just send them separately, send the key first.

Or, send the key to the box with a different lock to the friend. Then send the locked box to the friend.

Check it out you go to home depot get a molding of the key. Mail off the molding to your friend tell him to get a key made. Send the box now he has a copy of the key and can get the lock open.

You send the key in an envelope... and the package separately. So the friend can open the envelope with the key, and then open the box.

Send the key separately.

you send it to him locked with a padlock, your friend then puts his own lock on the box. He sends the box back to you where you take off your lock and then you send it back to him, where it's now only got his lock attached.
