I don't think it's possible that "god" created the universe at all...there's no evidence of any kind that any supernatural being was involved -- we've got a pretty good understanding of how it came about naturally, no gods needed.
From a purely religious standpoint, however, consider what you suggested: if "god" created the universe by accident, that would mean he was *not* the all-powerful and all-knowing super being he's claimed to be by religions. You can't accidentally do anything if you're all-knowing ('cause you'd already know that your "accident" was going to happen, so it wouldn't be an accident at all if you knew what was going to happen!). So if you believe in god and you believe he created the universe -- no, he couldn't have done it by accident.
It's much more likely, however, that no mythical god was involved at all -- the universe just happened. In that sense, it *was* sort of an accident...and I for one am glad that it happened!
:)

Why not? As an atheist, I have no investment in any scenario.
I do think however, that if there is a god, it has to be a man because:
1). Child birth – no way are men going through that grief. If men gave birth there would be an abortion clinic on every street-corner of every village/town/city in the world (right across from the Strip Club and the auto-parts store).
2). Women’s plumbing. If god were a woman, she would never have made women suffer through the endless series of yeast, bladder, and general urinary tract infections that plague all women (I think god designed this part during half-time of a football game).
3). That whole menstrual thing. If men had to go through that, the very first thing they would do (at the first opportunity) would be to go to a doctor and have the whole system surgically removed.

lol, yes, that might very well be the case. I've always wondered if God could make a rock so small (like earth), that he'd forget about it.
Very cool, trippy question! Well done. I will ponder this a little more, and look forward to reading the other answers.

I must admit that I have never thought about that. That is really funny. One could make some good jokes with that idea. It sure looks like He had an accident sometimes doesn't it? Well that first attempt at a human being was a bit off, if you ask me. Thank goodness he made another design the second time! Like cars, the next model is always the best. ;-)

In my opinion, this would be the only way God could have created the universe. God is perfect (or so Christians have told me). Perfection is complete; it needs nothing else. Therefore, God would have no need to create the universe on purpose.

Think about how complex humans are, both emotionally and physically. The body is a complicated thing. Then consider about the many beautiful aspects of our planet....like the mountains, oceans....think about the complexities of such things like volcanoes, grand canyons. Even rain comes from a very complex process....all of these things are too extraordinary to have just happened accidentally. To me it seems like every things was carefully planned. Plus its kind of degrading to think that God, or whoever you believe in, said "oops" when creating humans... This world is too beautiful to have just appeared as a mistake. Don't you think so?

It would not be very "Christ like" to condemn you for your question. I think it is a very good question and your answer can be found in the first verse of Genesis 1:1 "In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth"! There is alot of good books out there in your search for the truth. May God Bless you as you seek the truth!

Possible, sure.
But it's far more likely that the universe created god by accident.

Good question. In a strange way, you are not too far from the truth. At the time, when 'He' conceived creation, creation instantly took on a life of it's own and developed in ways 'He' never suspected it would. Did you know that even 'God' could be surprised?---------This is not to say creation is a mistake.

Best logical answer I can give would be No we are not a byproduct. Man was made in the image of God, so we know God was thinking of us when he made us. So why would we question whether or not it was a mistake for God to make our surroundings. If he made mistakes, what would that make iternity?
