Wow, other than the first answer you have got some very sad view points. Scarification, like tattooing started as an identifier for differing tribes. It has become popular in the last few years with "westeners". It can be used alone or with a tattoo. It involves cutting the skin (sometimes even removing very thin strips) through the first layer in a pattern or design. I have seen some that was done by a good artist that was used to complement a tattoo. I really liked the look of it but I think I will just stick to my plain old tattoos thank you. If you are thinking about doing this make sure you go to someone who knows what they are doing. Ask a good tattoo artist for a recomendation.

Scarification is a form of body modification that some people find beautiful. One cuts into their skin a design which they find appealing, and when it heals, they are left with a scar on their skin in that design.

Examples of this can be found, I believe, on www.bmezine.com. Be careful - some of the pictures are very graphic.

Scarification- make scratches on skin: to make scratches on or superficial incisions in the skin, as a traditional cosmetic practice in some cultures or as a medical procedure

Some people, depressed and need help kind of people, use it the same way people cut themselves. It releases endorphins and causes a momentary amount of pleasure.

I wouldn't recomend it. Get help instead.
