You want good songs that will get people up dancing but need to consider the ages of your guests. If everyone is young you probably won't want stuff from the 60's - however, parents and grandparents will love stuff like that so you need a really good mixture. I would go for some current stuff, then pick songs from the decades to cover all bases, making sure the stuff chosen is actually music you can dance to. Go for some rock, some dance etc. Be selfish too - pick your favourite tunes too so you can have a good boogie. ENJOY!

Honest opinion?
Think you must be worried about it if your asking this question. Its your day and everyone wants theres to be perfect. Its nice to help out a family friend but you only get married once.
If you are worried about it being this persons first time doing a wedding reception why not hire a band or singer and split the evening between the two, that way you have a fall back.
Getting people to suggest songs if all very well but i think it all depends on who the guests at the wedding are. Everyone likes different things and the DJ will have to try and please most people.
Good luck for your wedding day. Hope it's perfect.
