put cream, sugar, flavouring, ice and salt onto the ice, if you don't have an ice cream maker, place the cream, sugar, and flavouring into a ziploc bag, then place in a bigger bag and fill the larger bag up with ice and add salt. shake for 5-15 mins or until ice cream like. oh and make sure theres no holes in the bag

lets see ... you need some ice ... and you need some cream .... and ... lol
Seriously
you need milk fat in the form of cream, half and half, and/or milk in some combination. The more fat the more fattening, but the less fat the harder it will be to get a good texture especially at home.
you need a sweetner in the form or sugar, corn syrup, etc...
you should refigerate the finished mixture until cold, don't go straight into the ice cream maker with warm mix.
you then freeze in an ice cream maker by the manufacturers instructions or you can partially freeze/stir/freeze/stir/freeze/stir in a bowl -- you get a somewhat crude ice cream but it works.
you then put into a storage container and let the finished ice cream harden in the freezer for a couple hours.
beyond that almost everything is optional
you need flavorings usually in the form of extracts or oils such as vanilla extract, pepermint oil, and cocoa powder (makes better chocolate than actual chocolate). Although not all at once.
you can use eggs as a base and make a custard for a lighter richer creamier "french" style ice cream.
you can use fruit.
you can add cinnamon.
you can add candy pieces or crystalized ginger.
you can add lemon juice as an antioxidant.
you can cook or scald the base or freeze it raw.
beyond that just add love and imagination.
just don't try and make trout ice cream! Even the great Iron Chef Sakai couldn't sell that one and no one has seen him since ... lol

I Made it in Middle School... but that was along time ago.... but my friends and i followed this recipe below and it is sooooooo good aslong as you do it right...
Give it a try!
2 Quarts of Half and Half Milk
4 Eggs (Optional)
2 Instant Puddings (Vanilla or Chocolate to compliment the flavor)
2 Cups of Sugar
1 Can of Condensed Milk or 1 pint of Heavy Cream (Optional for extra smoothness and special occasions)
Flavor is obtained by adding fruit, candy bars or soda pop. (See chart below)
2 Bags of Ice
3 Cups of Rock Salt to melt the Ice
A Wooden Bucket to keep it all together
An Electric Motor to take the work out of it
A Metal Ice Cream Container to hold the ingredients

depends on the type of ice cream. Traditional homemade ice cream tends to be more like 'ice milk'. So:
cream/milk
sugar
eggs
some sort of flavoring (vanilla, chocolate, fruits of all ilk)
lots of ice
rock salt
