I have always put crackers in my soup. It was the way that my parents ate soup and I picked it up from them. As for why, I don't know.

I have always put crackers in my soup, so I know this practice started before 1960 or so. That's as far back as I can trace the history.
I believe in taking the practice one step further, and putting butter on the crackers before putting them in the soup. I think this works in almost ANY kind of soup!

Lots of reasons why but I think it started in the depression. Made watery soup more filling and salted and not wasted. Did you know two handle Popsicles came from that era? You could break and share with a friend. Just thought that interesting.

I'm not trying to be smartalicky, but I think it's because the crackers absorb the broth so you don't have to drink the broth from the bowl and dribble it down your chin. Sometimes the broth is the best part and you don't want to waste it.
