Do you mean Pyrex, the oven proof glass?
Pyrex is a brand name of a borosilicate glass produced by Corning Glass Works from 1915. It became a by-word for the product (like Hoovers have for vacuum cleaners) although they weren't the first to produce it. But they stopped making it just before the millennium and the Pyrex brand is actually now owned by World Kitchen, Inc. Although they manufacture it from Soda-lime glass now.

If you want to get technical - Pyrex is manufactured by adding boron to a mixture of silicate sand, soda, and ground lime. It melts at a higher temperature than ordinary silicate glass and required a novel way to achieve such heat in the manufacture.

When you heat it Borosilicate glass only expands to about a third of what ordinary glass does and so resists breaking more when exposed to high temperatures. Pyrex tends to crack into large pieces when you break it rather than shattering like ordinary glass but it certainly will break if you expose it to sudden or uneven changes in temperature.

Pyrex is made by blasting silicon granules and 8 secret ingredients into glass. It was invented for railroad lanterns which previously had a history of cracking when exposed to the elements.
