It is a requirement, that while training to be a psychotherapist, you are expected to attend regular therapy sessions for self and work through your own issues. After all what good would you be as a therapist if a client presents you with a particular problem that smacks you in the face ? Not only are you yourself stuffed and screwed by it, but more importantly you stuff the client as well. As a trainer, i always insisted that trainees get into receiving their own therapy and continue to do so while practising !

It was actually on the news two days ago how many people who work in the mental health field actually have to have their own therapy as they end up suffering as a result of their job. If this is the case then I Can't see why you wouldn't be allowed to work in this field. At least you would be offered the best care.

Thanks Avondrow.
It depends on the type of mental health problems, a delusional Schizophrenic then NO.

But anyone in the psychology field is still human and they still have stress and pressures and worries of their own, so if thats what you mean.
You try listening to peoples problems all day and not be affected.

And for the record anyone doing that kind of work is required to have a counsellor of their own in order to practice, as it means you have someone to talk to about the stress this type of work casues.

Great .. try it and see if you like it, there are many areas of mental health field to work in. Dr Frese was a schizophrenic. John Nash also seriously mentally ill was a Nobel prize winner.

I would think so, as long as you are under a psychoterapists's care yourself.
If you are in touch with yourself, and are in touch with reality, you would be a great help for your clients, as you would really understand their problems a lot.
However, if you would start feeling that your mental health was in jeapordy, you would need to stop and get help for yourself.
Also something else to consider, sometimes listening to others talk about their own problems, might make you feel your own problems MORE, so it would be absolutely MANDATORY that you stay in contact with your own doctor.

To be perfectly honest, the majority of the psychotherapists and mental health workers I have encountered have been amongst the most screwed up people I've ever met!

it can makes things worse. Mental illness is all to do with brain and if someone is really stressed you'll, after a while, start to carry that stress on your mind and prob will suffer worse,

If it was just depression that isnt bad then that would be ok but I honestly wouldnt go for it,as it can and will affect you in the nearer future.

Yes, they can. A medical doctor can practice even if they have a disease or a physical disability, right?
