I hear ya, and can tell you this......If you have 3 children under the age of 7, OMG, I give you koodos! Here's a suggestion. Hire a babysitter.....Have the baby sitter arrive at say 5pm....Tell her to wear something pretty.(you are not at home)..........Tell her to be ready by 6pm (or however long it takes her to get ready)......"mystery"...........(you are still NOT home)........Go by a florist........pick up a bunch of flowers (they do NOT have to be roses!!!just colorful!)..........Ring the doorbell, give her the flowers, then take her to her favorite restaurant ...(you have already called ahead for reservations, told them her fave bottle of wine or that it is a "special night".......not necessarily her 40th!), they have a special table waiting, (you have dropped off a gift to the manager, (how about a charm for a necklace with something inscribed??), he/she brings it out after dinner on her dessert plate or with coffee. OR, one better, "if" you can, drop the kids off at a relatives house for the night, and after a nice dinner, you have already purchased a bag of rose petals, and they are laying on the bed with candles lit.............(favorite cd playing in backround...PRICELESS!!!

Are you and she involved in a romantic relationship? If so, I'd say You find a cool place for her kids to stay overnight. They have overnight kid camps with fun and educational activities. Or just a babysitter that will take all 3 and have a slumber party. Then, get some take-out Thai food and have the table set nicely with candles. You can eat whenever you both get hungry. The bedroom is where the most important gift happens. Make it into a beautiful birthday shrine. Candles, soft decorations such as sheer fabric remnants. Just go to the fabric store and look at their table with left over pieces. Buy a few and place them around. Finally, the most important part of the gift--a massage by YOU. Make it at least 90 minutes. Make sure the room is warm. Make sure the sheets are comfortable and soft. This gift will be a gift to both of you.

Something luxurious like a day spa sounds wonderful plus dinner at a great restaurant and the kids overnighting some where until at least the afternoon of the next day .A simple classic piece of jewellery like a gold bracelet to mark the occasion would absolutely put the icing on the cake . let her know how wonderful she is !! she's worth so much more

What does your lady friend like to do?

Dancing - maybe you should sign up for a few lessons with YOU being her dance partner.

Vacation - somewhere romantic - Myrtle Beach, SC, Lake Tahoe, San Francisco - depending on where you are. Just an overnight trip would be nice. Stay with friends you know in a city you've never visited.

Pearl earrings or necklace
Diamond earring
nice designer watch

If she loves karoke, buy her a karoke machine and have a party. Your kids can come and everyone of all ages will enjoy singing along.

And if those things are a little out of your price range, I suggest you take one of those jewelry making classes and make her a necklace and earrings. Priceless!
