There are lots of different kinds. Some have console type toys that attach like a tray, others have cords attached so that they wont drop.
What you buy depends on what you think your son will like.
Regardless of what you buy - also ask yoruself - if I were in an accident what would happen to the toy? I know a child who had one of the console type toys that was molded plastic attached to his car seat that ended up hurting him when they were in a car accident. He was properly in his car seat and the accident was not his mom's fault (in fact the police said without the car seat he would have died). The toy ended up cracking and the plastic pieces ended up cutting his face and chest. Everyone was ok... and it was not something I had thought about before (my kids both had car seat toys). We now only have small, soft toys that are kept ina basket between their seats (the basket is buckeled in with the lap belt in the middle). And I just have to pick up the ones than end up on the floor and toss them back in the basket at the end of the drive.

We have always just carried a little box of toys in the car. Like a Rubbermaid or Sterilite container with a lid.....shoebox sized. We keep some board books, a travel sized Magnadoodle, small toys, etc. in there for the kids.

these are not really toys but my suggestion is to find some pictures or charcters he or she might like and get them laminated then punch holes through the top and hang them from the top of the ceiling of your car right in front of his seat. This is great for the "brain stimulation" and they always had fun reaching for there favorite picture (keeps them active too) plus once they are tiredd of their little toy car they usually just chuck it at the nearest member of the cars head. This is easy and safe. Always worked for us!
