I've never heard that before, and I know lots of Shia and lots of Sunni. Maybe the particular group with which you associate has this deep hatred, but all the prominent Shia scholars teach that to be a Muslim, a person must believe "la ilaha il Allah, Mohammad rasool Allah". That is all that is required to be Muslim, and both Sunni and Shia believe that. A few of the Sunni scholars call Shia non-Muslim, but most do not.

Not all of them hate each other, but those who do, do so mainly because many of their practices and beliefs are quite different from each other (and almost opposite to each other). Sunnis think they're true Muslims, and Shias think they're true Muslims. The truth is, Allah (God) is the Judge, and while we're living in this world now, He has told us to follow the Quran and Sunnah (traditions of Prophet Muhammad, peace be upon him) and forget who's right and who's wrong. And there aren't supposed to be divisions in Islam in the first place, let alone deciding which branch is Muslim or not!
6:159: "As for those who divide their religion and break up into sects, thou hast no part in them in the least: their affair is with Allah: He will in the end tell them the truth of all that they did."
Quran, 30:31: "Turning to Him, and be careful of (your duty to) Him and keep up prayer and be not of the polytheists"
30:32: "Those who split up their Religion, and become (mere) Sects,- each party rejoicing in that which is with itself!"

They dont - only extremists in either sects do - the vast majority of sunni and shia scholars and non-scholars consider the other fellow Muslims and believers
example Iran which is Shia always speaks of the sunni Muslims as its brothers and fellow Muslims
and Sunnis have always been in control of Hajj and have always allowed to Shias to perform it - something that is only permitted to Muslims
The sectarian violence in say Iraq has as much to do with political power as anything else
Sunnis and Shias are Muslim brothers and sisters forever

It goes both ways, although I'm sure there are many many many members of both sects that dont adhere to this extreme view.
Muslims are not supposed to kill other muslims, in theory anyway. If the other guy is not a muslim, he is "fair game".

I agree with shaybani... It's the extreme ones and if they aren't extreme then they are simply ignorant. Lucky for me I'm neither one. :) I have been known to take from both sides. :)
