Do you need to use car-seat if using airport shuttle/taxi/limos ?
What do you do with the car-seat when you get to the airport ?
Are there any 'portable' type of car seats that perhaps can be used ?

If you are in a state that requires care seats, the taxi will need one. Buses do not.
Some taxi companies will provide a car seat - if they know ahead of time you need one, so ask when you call to schedule to cab.
There are a couple of portable kinds.... they are not near as good as the real ones but good enough for travel. I got one at www.onestepahead.com
If you choose to take your regular car seat with you, you can check it as luggage - I would suggest gate checking it (that is taking it through security with you and having the flight attendants tag it and have it stowed with the luggage as you get on the plane) instead of checking it atthe baggage counter. The baggage handlers can be rough and if you gate check it it will be last on, first off - they will do the same with your stroller. Take a large plastic bag or buy a zipper cover though so that it wont get dirty when they put it in the cargo hold.
have a good trip and good luck

I have two kids under three myself, so I know the problems with air travel.

On a airport shuttle, just hold the child in your lap. There would be no way to belt in a car seat anyway.

If you pay for a seat for your child, you can board early and bring the carseat with you. You can also check the car seat for your trip and just buckle a three year old into the airplane seat.

Here is a portable carseat that is out there that you might like. My friend has one, and she swears by it.

I think when you are talking "shuttle" you don't mean the little bus-like things that run from the parking lot to the terminal, I think you mean the vans that come to your house and pick you up. In which case you need your car seats. But won't you need them at your destination anyhow? You use it, when yo uget to the airport you check it with your luggage, and when you get to the other end you pick it back up.

Having recently come back from a holiday I can say that most people had their young children in pushchairs right up until boarding the plane. At least you know where they are then but you would need to hold them on the shuttle bus.

Will your child have his/her own seat on the plane? If so, you'll want to use the carseat on the plane.

If your child is flying in your lap, you can gate check the car seat. (I think a 3 year old my be old enough to require their own seat though.) To gate check it, just get a tag when you check in and hand it off when you board the plane. When you get off the plane, it will be waiting for you to pick up as soon as you step off the aircraft.
