i think a candy dish with a lid is nice

It depends how feminine you want it to look.
Some things, no matter how hard you try, just end up always looking like they belong to women.
Candles are good, just make sure you have holders, and some that match.
A vase of flowers, preferrably fresh or a bowl of dried petals with votive candles inside of it (the little circular ones)
I'd go with rose petals or, as they contain their scent longer than others.
The good thing with flowers (and the petals) is that they can be customized to the season switched out, and the petals put in special bowls.
Also with votive candles, since their small enough, you can put them in water and a bowl and they'll float.
That's quite pretty.
Take some bottles, old or new, some that have character, put things in them. The candles, maybe. Or marbles.
Miscellaneous items that look classic, but not cluttered.
Antique toys, ceramics, books that look impressive (though don't have to read them : ) )

I usually have what you call a "coffee table book" - hard cover books with really nice pictures that people can pick up and casually thumb through. Flowers or candles are always nice or a small sculpture would be cool. Also a really nice candy dish with wrapped candy are always popular.

Magazines, flowers, alot of small candles or a couple of the big ones. You could also look in home magazines, I'm sure they'll have something or on the web too. Well good luck.

a nice glass-typed bowl with some pouporri in it. Perhaps a lamp to accompany it. The other ideas are good too. Or maybe two or three nice books arranged in a fan-style.
