I think you have found your answer...
I've often wondered the same thing myself, however, christianity isn't the only religion that uses the idea that knowledge was forbidden. So it's not just christianity, as, I'm sure, many will assume. Also, the gnostics (the first christians) believed that knowledge was the end all be all. They used the gospels (there was no bible until after the literalists began killing the gnostics) as stories that guided people to knowledge. At the highest level of gnostic christianity, people were told that the stories were only metaphors and that they should use their own judgement when deciding their own morals.

In James, we find the scripture, "If anyone seeks wisdom, let him ask of God." As to Father God's motives, it is obvious that He wanted us to know the truth. He knew that man had learned deceit from eating the fruit and would not be truthful with one another or Himself. The knowledge gained from that moment of disgrace will always be our downfall. How many people do you know that will always tell you the absolute truth 100% of the time? Think about it.

Your assumption of that makes you the ignorant one. God gave us His instructions and wisdom in His word that is in the Holy Bible. You can either choose to be educated with it and obtain knowledge and wisdom or choose not to read it and remain ingnorant by your own choice. Put the blame where it belongs, on yourself and not on God.
Proverbs 1:7 The fear of the LORD is the beginning of knowledge: but fools despise wisdom and instruction.
Proverbs 2:6 For the LORD giveth wisdom: out of his mouth cometh knowledge and understanding.
Colossians 3:16 Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom; teaching and admonishing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with grace in your hearts to the Lord.

Of course, God didn't write that, Man did. It is true that religions want people to be ignorant and pass the collection plate around, rather than think for themselves.

Since we are created in God's image I cannot believe that we are to be ignorant. I am a lifelong believer and a practicing Christian and nowhere have I seen, heard or read that God wants humankind to be ignorant

I don't know that God does (I'm not able to ask him, myself) but I would think most religious people do.

Isn't "faith", or unquestioning belief, just a sugar coated way of saying ignorance?
