It's difficult to answer that because it depends on your situation. You say it's an EZ because you are single without dependents or property, but you may have deductions because of your type of work. For example, if you work in a trade or sales or have unreimbursed employee business expenses or major medical expenses your return could be more complex. Also if you make very little money but are eligible for the earned income credit, your return could be more expensive too. You can try a tax prep service but they charge by the form. A simple tax return for a single person can be $100 or less, unless you have one of the above situations.

A CPA costs about $100 a form, unless you can make a deal, in my experience. See if you know anyone who knows a CPA-- a lot of CPAs will give you a discount for being referred by someone they know. If you do it with H&R Block, it might be less pricey-- you can e-file online and they can tell you what deals they have available. My brother-in-law was 3 years behind in his tax forms (he didn't owe any taxes, of course), and they let him file all 3 years for a set price.

Yikes! Do you realize that a $40 purchase of TurboTax every year could have avoided this mess? Anyway, that's not what you asked. Most CPAs bill by the hour. My hourly rate, since I'm a sole practitioner, is about $75/hour, but I'm generally willing to waive that and just charge by the job. If I were you, I'd try to find a recommendation from a friend and find a small practitioner such as myself (only in CA-I'm in IL) and she'd probably be willing to charge you a flat amount, instead of hourly.

Good luck!

We offer free estimates and no obligation.

But, we have to see the complete job we're handling first.

You have CA 540's due, too. We can do it; we can help!

It depends mostly on how complex your return is.

It also depends on where you are, since charges vary in different places in the country.

Figure $100 and up.
