generally, yes. But it doesn't mean you're doomed. Your parnter's genetics play a role also. I was nine pounds, and my kids were born at 6 lbs 14 oz. and 8 lbs 9oz. You really can't predict.

Babies which are bigger than 90% of other babies born at the same number of weeks of development are called LGA or Large for Gestational Age.

The absolute most common cause for babies which are LGA is maternal diabetes. Diabetes during pregnancy causes the mother's increased blood glucose (sugar) to circulate to the baby. In response, the baby's body makes insulin. All the extra sugar and the extra insulin production can lead to excessive growth and deposits of fat, thus, a larger baby.

Although some babies are large because their parents are large; genetics plays a much smaller part. Birthweight is also related to the amount of a mother's weight gain in pregnancy. Excessive weight gain can translate to increased fetal weight.

Due to the risks associated with a LGA baby the best thing for you as a mom to do is to relax and control those factors which you can. This means be screened appropriately for maternal diabetes, eat healthy during your pregnancy, and gain the recommended amounts of weight throughout the course of your baby's development.

Beyond that, you and the baby's father would have both had to have been bigger than 90% of the other babies at your birth for this to be a risk factor for you, and is a much less likely to play significantly in the size of your babiy's weight than the above mentioned factors.

Good Luck!

Yes, big babies are hereditary, but do not worry about having a large child and injury to yourself. I was 10lbs. 2 oz. myself and my first son was born a month early and still weighed 8lbs. 7 1/2 oz. , they were expecting him to be about 12 lbs if he went full term. But since the Dr. knows that you were a large baby, they watch the rate that your fetus is growing and they take every precaution. If they feel the baby will be too large, believe me, they will take it cesarean before they will tear you apart! Don't worry! By the way, my second was only 8lbs. 2 oz. but the third was 10lbs.

genes do play a part in birth size but there are other factors as well, you also need to consider your partners birth size and in theory you shouldn't grow a baby too big for you to deliver - did you have any siblings and were they big babies too? You may have been a big baby because yur mum had gestational diabetes - there are lots of other factors to consider.

If you are still worried, discuss with your midwife and they should be able to offer you an extra scan towards the end of your pregnancy to judge the size of the baby.

i think it more down to lifestyle or somthing.

i was 7lb 6 and my son was 8lb 13

a lot of my friends have had big but were small when born themsleves.

my midwife says a large size baby indicates a good pregnancy i.e. not smoking/drinking.

a few ppl were rude towards me about my babys weight but 2 me he still looked tiny and i would rather have a large baby knowing he was healthy and i looked after him well.

whatever the size you will be fine durring birth you are as likly to tear with a big baby as you are with a small one. listern to the midwives and relax.... enjoy every second of this amazing experience.

good luck (im due again in 8 weeks time)

i think they are my first was girl and she was 10lbs 8 oz then my second was a boy and he was 10lbs 12oz and then 5months later my husbands cousin had a boy and he was 11lbs 1oz . i think it comes from his side i was only 6lbs 7oz , but my husbands mum was 11lbs when she was born she now has 3 sons and a daughter and they were all normal weight. dont worry now a days if they think you will be having a big baby they will bring you in early and induce or they will c/section you.

The best way to tell how big your baby will be is to average out you and your husbands birth wieghts, you+husban=.../2=baby. Try it, it will work trust me. You can do the same with the babys hieght, (full grown hieghts divided by two=babys full grown hieght) hope that helped
