The best way would be to make an appointment at a salon and they will do a consultation with you. They will ask you what you have in mind (ie: Do you want to go lighter/darker, highlights/lowlights)
They have the samples of the colors for you to look at.
I also try to find a picture from a magazine that looks close to what I have in mind then that way they have a visual.
If you don't want to pay for them to do it you don't have to make an appointment. You can simply tell them that you would like to think more about this decision and then take the information they gave you and try to match it up at the store to the at home kits.
Just remember that if you go to light and don't bleach your hair (if it's darker) it can sometimes look brassy and sort of a weird orange color.

try going to www.clairol.com and click on the try it out studio. upload your photo and start trying different colors of hair and see if it look good on you. you have to sign up though, but its free! happy looking!
