Hi I am a british nurse who works in the NHS i agree it is great to get a full treatment when and were you want it, I myself do have a private health care policy. But in the national health service we offer people who would normally go without excellant care and treatment. Why should the rich get the best our Doctors do both NHS and private work so you still see the same doctor wether you are private or not.
Maybe I am biased but I am very proud of the service we offer.

Look at Youtube for a video called OneCareNow. I'm not sure if the short version has it, but the long version talks about how medical care in America compares to the rest of the world. I think we're ranked 30th or something, just above Cuba, but we spend twice as much per person as other countries. It costs us more not to have universal care, and it's actually more dangerous. If someone with Tuberculosis doesn't get treated, that exposes innocent people like you and me to that disease. After all, we don't charge people for police or fire service if they need it, we charge everyone a little and make sure it's there for everyone. The current system is so broken that I applaud anyone who's got an idea to fix it.

The Us is the only Industrialized nation, and one of only about 20 nations in the world that does not offer its citizens UHC. Most of the other industrial nations offer pensions protected by the govt, unemployment that covers till you can be re-employed, workers comp that actually takes care of the injured person and replaces wages while they are out of work and provides paid leave for both child birth and for time needed to care for ailing parents, spouse or children
See we are way behind! On top of that we work more hours a week than any other industrial nation (45 on ave)
Japan is #2 at 39 hours a week, Germany, Sweden ave only 35

No, other countries are not wrong. We are just too stuck in our profit driven society to sacrifice so that everyone receives adequate medical care. There are many many people who need medicine, vaccines, and emergency services but don't have the money to pay. However, they are stuck that way because richer Americans are too cranky about taxes. America is in the mind set that everyone should work to get richer and richer, fending for themselves, and government is an obstacle on that path. However, government should be there to serve each citizen, collectively and individually. We need to be comfortable paying more taxes so we can get the job done. Then we, our grandparents, our paperboy and the people who picked our strawberries all can have their life saved after a car accident and their teeth cleaned every 6 months. It's the nice and responsible thing to do. And if you were on the bottom of the ladder, it's what you'd want the top to do, too.

I have been to Canada, they have great Health Care. It is a lie that Canadians come to the USA for Health Care, some do but not average. It is also a lie that Canadian Doctors come here for higher pay. Republicans have no problem with lies. Republicans have a agenda, that agenda does not include the average working class American. Part of the Republican agenda is to end Social Security, they also want to end Medicare and Medicaid. As we now have a $9 trillion debt ran up by Republicans, they are closer to that goal. WE will spend $498 billion on defense in 2007. Bush has ask for another $100 billion for Iraq.

Healthcare is provided for people who are impoverished, aged or have serious disabilities but not for the majority of people here for many reasons.

A few are:

American medicine evolved as a for profit industry. Universal Healthcare would limit profits.

Universal Healthcare is very expensive and often not efficient. I know of people who have waited 5 years or more for elective surgeries.

People who are now living under Universal Healthcare sometimes take additional insurances to improve their standard of care.

Insurance companies make a lot of profit from insuring people. They lobby constantly in congress and sponsor congressional campaigns to influence lawmakers to support them. Universal Healthcare would limit insurance profits as well. Ironically insurance companies are finding that it's cheaper for patients to go to foreign countries for their healthcare and are supporting those who do so.

Are the other countries wrong to have Universal Healthcare? No. But having Universal Healthcare has meant less money for research in those countries. The US has been a leader in medical research for decades. But other countries are catching up. We need have at least minimal and catastrophic healthcare in place for everyone.

Universal health care in other countries is a scam. For the most part, people in those countries do without all but the most basic healthcare. You might get an antibiotic, if you really need it (then again, you might not, depending on the country). But, you can forget about expensive, life saving surgeries for heart attack victims etc. You are just left to die. This includes the country with the best universal health care system on the planet, our neighbor to the north, Canada.

The people pushing universal health care in the US actually want to destroy the healthcare system so that you too will have to do without. These same people (and by that I mean the exact same, specific people) are largely responsible for what is causing the skyrocketing healthcare costs to begin with.....immigration and illegal immigration. Although it is illegal, they create various ways that ensure these people get services they don't pay into. The result of their non-payment into the system causes everyone else to make up the cost. In many areas, the problem is so bad that large parts of the system are going bankrupt. Insurance carriers going out of business and hospitals shutting their doors.

This is done ON PURPOSE. The aliens are just pawns in aan EVIL agenda these people are engaged in to take over our country and replace democracy with a sick marxist style fascist state.

You could write thousands of pages on who specifically is doing what.

I look at this from 2 sides - the first being the poor & the elderly are covered by Medicare & Medicaid. The second side is that I do not want to pay more taxes & I do not expect anyone to pay more taxes to pay for my healthcare. I chose the quality of care that I want & I am willing to pay for it. I do not want you to decide when I can go to doctor or who I see, in return I do not expect you to supplement the cost of my care in any way. I like my $200 an hr. doctor & will see her when I want.

Is the US wrong? I do not think so, maybe we need to increase the number of people receiving help but I have 3 Canadian friends & 2 of them move here to get better healthcare (the other moved here to get married). They relocated their companies & I took that to mean they really did not like their health care.

what most people do not know is how many people elderly disabled and low income have free or low cost health care. it is about 40 mil last time I looked. that is a huge number and a big cost. most other nations can do this but i lived in canada for while it does not cover everthing the service is not the great long wtg list. try 2 yrs or more for some surgeries. it does not cover everthing and they have 31 mil vs 300 they also pay very very high taxes on everything. 14 in ontario now. the main tax on everything across the board is 9 percent.

Universal health care does not provide the best care. There is competition among doctors to keep being educated in their field by the US standard. One thing very great about this country is you are not turned away even when you cannot afford to pay and have the same benefit of treatment as do the insured. This is one great country.
