Can the plastic gear that is responsible for pulling the door up be replaced? This is the main gear inside the works.

It sure can. Call a garage door installer, give them the model and serial numbers. They will order the part. The instructions will be in the box...Good luck!

You can buy replacement gear kits through Sears. You may want to try a garage door company that handles Chamberlain garage door openers, as Chamberlain makes garage door openers for Sears. The gear kits are the same. However if your garage door opener was made before 1992 and does not have the infrared safety beam, they will not sell you the kit, as it does not pass safety codes.

You should be able to replace that part, but you will have to call a sears parts store or visit sears' website. (they may have a skematic for that, that you can pick out the gear that you need) If the opener is more that 5 years old, I would just replace the opener. With a replacement you would have a upgraded opener with more functions to it.
