They are a lot of work. They have a lot of skin problems, they are dirty, sometimes have breathing problems, and have a lot of slobber. If you really love the breed research it before you get one.

any dog can be ok for a first time dog owner. but with small children you do not want to get a very small fragile dog for the dog's safety. any breed you research and talk to reputable breeders and owners of that breed. be prepared for the cost of vet care, crate, toys, leash collar and other supplies and a training class. have a walking, feeding and other schedule ready to go as soon as puppy gets home. as for the english bulldog in general. if you first follow all of the above suggestions, you'll do fine. but keep in mind english bulldogs are prone to more medical problems and can be one of the most costly dogs there is and they tend to have short life spans. should not be out long on hot days as they overheat easily. and children might want a dog that can last as long as they do. but research it. reputable breeders will tell you if they think this is the dog for you and your needs. are your children good with a dog is the first question you need to answer. i do not know you or your children and can only assume. make sure you find a way for the kids to be involved in the dog care and training as well. but i have to admit these dogs are cute as hell and are hard to resist. best of luck to you!

English bulldogs can be great family pets, but they do have special needs. For instance, if you get a female, and decide to breed her, it is common for them to need a c-section for giving birth. This type of thing can be costly.
You may want to ask your vet, and research the specific breed before you get one. There are great articles about different dog breeds on the AKC web site, and on other sites like DogFancy.com, etc. This may help you choose the right breed for your family.

I have one thats 9 years old. He loves my grandkids (ages 2 through 11) and is the most loyal dog I have ever had. The kids love to play with him and no matter how rough they get he just takes it till he gets tired of them then lumbers away and lays under the table. He was easy to housebreak and has a laid back personality that everyone just seems to fall in love with. Only real problem with him is he farts when he eats Doritos. snores and occasionally drools.

bull dogs are great as long as your children aren't very active the dog is not meant to keep up like other higher energy dogs could. They also get hot easy! You might also want to we think them if you have a lot of stairs in your house as they don't do well on stairs there was one in a local shelter because it couldn't do the stairs anymore as it got older.
