There is a conflict between the best (meaning most money) and safest (depending on meaning). Even if you sell it to a firearms dealer, you need to get a receipt since I have heard of cases where the firearm was not logged in and instead sold illegally.
Here are a few of the firearms auction sites:

http://www.gunbroker.com
http://www.ebang.com/
http://www.a-gun.com/default.cfm
http://www.auctionarms.com/

The problem with auctions is that it is for a limited period of time and you need two or more people who are interested in it, otherwise the price does not go up.
The best way is to advertise the firearm on various firearms forums and email lists, but you need to determine the value of the firearm first. You can set a reserve for the auctions, but some places charge you even if it does not sell, it can get expensive.
Once you sell it, you need to make sure that the funds are good. There are numerous scams involving bogus cashier checks and money orders, often for amounts more than what you are selling it for. Then, you need to find a firearms dealer to sent it to, if the person is not local. In some states it is legal to sell a firearm directly to another person, but you need to protect yourself by getting information from the seller as you don't want them to use it in a crime and have the firearm traced back to you.
Unless there is a state law preventing it, you can ship a firearm yourself, but handguns can not be shipped USPS by non-FFLs and FedEx and UPS require expensive shipping, so it could be cheaper to have a FFL ship it, depending on rates. Before you ship it, you need to get a signed copy of the FFL, check the status on the BATF EZcheck web page (https://www.atfonline.gov/fflezcheck/) and make sure that you follow all shipping laws, such as requesting an adult signature, no markings on the box that it is a firearm, telling the shipper that it is a firearm, etc.

Read the "How do I sell: section.....
"You do not have to be a licensed dealer to sell a firearm. By Federal law, the person to whom you SHIP the gun must be a licensed dealer. If the buyer is not a licensed dealer, the buyer must make arrangements with a licensed dealer in his state to receive the firearm and transfer it to the buyer."
Look up "Colt Python" on the listings....lots of bids on each one listed. You should do well! Good luck!

In addition to gunbrokers.com try the following links. You'll need to sell through someone with and FFL (Federal Firearms License). I've also seen places that will sell through one of these sites for a fee. In any case you'll be able to see what they are selling for. Unfired stainless I've seen for over $2,000.
Good luck.

There are online gun auction sites I know... Im not sure of the url.
Some gun stores will let you sell on consignment. It also depends on what state you live in. California can be difficult if sold out of state.

You have to go to gun show to meet the buyers with the right price. You can also go to gun forum online and ask around for interested buyers. Ebay does not work.

Gunbroker.com is the best on-line forum i've seen.
Look for gun shows in your area. If it's in the condition you say, you'll get a good price for it.

You know, I would keep your Python if it is in "never fired" condition. Use silica desicate and oil and LOCK IT UP. It is an investment. It is one of the few guns that will go up in value. Most guns will not anymore.
