What is happening in 2009 is that all over the air broadcasts will change to digital from analog. This is not the much rumored HDTV conversion. There is NO date in which all television must be HD, this is just a simple case of people misunderstading technologies.

EDIT: To the guy below, it is only over the air analog that is going away, if you get cable or satellite, you would have no need for a converter, other than the satellite box or digital cable box you already might have.

Lets just clear up things a little.

1) in 2009 analog will go away

2) When the analog is gone we will then have Digital TV

3) We have all three right not analog, digital, and HD.

4)All that's going to change is #1. So HD which is available to those with the equipment now will increase in popularity, more channels will be be broadcast in HD and all channels will be Digital in 2009. Digital and HD are not the same thing.
Those people who do not have digital TVs are suppose to be provided with a box which converts digital to analog. That remains to be seen.

In 2009, that's the date when all stations will begin broadcast in HD. It's suppose to be 2007 but the government moved it to 2009. Some of the programs, mostly sports, are HD right now.
