The Airtran

The cheapest way to get to Manhattan is through the AirTran. It is a train link from the Airport to the Subway system. It cost $7.00 dollars. Subway then is something link $2.00.

If you are not sure how to go about it, ask where and how to before proceeding. But in summary, this is what I use all the time and is the cheapest.

Buses are available, but are more expensive and will leave you at a certain point, rather than having the Subway available right away.

If it's during the daytime, from Newark Int'l Airport into Manhatten:
Take the #62 bus at Newark airport into Newark Penn Station. From there, take the PATH train (33rd street train) which brings you to 33rd and Broadway.

Bus $1.62
PATH train $1.50
