Potty Training Q, (when out)?

Question

My little boy (who is almost 3), is fully potty trained, the problem is that when we are out walking (we live in a quite a rural setting) if he needs to 'go'. He refuses to go in the woods & wets himself. I don't want to put him back into nappies, and always make sure he tries to go before we leave the house, However as Its only my mother (when im at work) or me who looks after him, he has no male in his life to teach him these things. I've tried to make it sound fun (when he's desperate) to avoid him wetting his pants, but I can never get him to go.
Can anyone give me some advice on how to convince him that its ok (in an emergency) & how I can help him to go, like how to position him, and where to do it ect...

I know it sounds odd, but carry an empty soda bottle (single serving with a twist cover) with you when you go. He can just stick it in and go...no mess, no spills, no wet pants. Unfortunately, this doesn't work with girls.

Sounds like you did a good job of teaching him to potty in the toilet. As an adult we can understand that in an emergency it is ok to do something different, but remember as a 3 year old he does not yet have that mental capability.

Can you leave a cup, a potty, or maybe just a toilet seat somewhere on the route that you usually take? Maybe he would be more comfortable with that. Can you "borrow" a male person to "show" him?

Unfortunately your son is trying to be "big" and follow the rules that he has associated with the potty (i.e. when you need to go, you go in the potty). Accidents happen to all 3 year olds, but maybe if you get him to go right before you leave for your walks, or limit your walks (if you can - you didnt say if you were walking or fun or walking because you have to go somewhere) to an amount of time that he can hold it - he wont have as many frequent accidents. Im sure you are doing the best you can, just remember not to scold him for accidents. That will only make it worse.

How to position him etc:

Most little boys like to have something in front of them when they wee outdoors such as a tree, even if they don't actually wee against it. Pull down his trousers and pants and lean him forward slightly so that the urine stream does not come into contact with the clothes now at his ankle (or, to be extra safe, remove his trousers and pants completely). Hold him steady throughout. He may want to hold his penis while he wees but it doesn't really matter if he doesn't. Take some tissue with you to wipe his penis after he has weed so that his pants do not become wet after he has put them on (this will discourage him). You may also want to take some wet wipes to wash his hands and your own. Praise him for being a big boy and not wetting his pants.

Encouraging him:

Take something with you like counters and place one of the ground in front of him. Challenge him to see if he can wet the counter with his wee. If he isn't giving you any indication that he needs to wee before wetting himself then use the above procedure as a dummy run, telling him that when he does need to wee he can have a go at wetting the counter.

Male involvement:

Is there a boy slightly older than your son who can go out with you for a walk such as a relative or friend's son. If so he many be able to demonstrate the procedure to your son. Make sure you give the boy plenty of drink beforehand so that he needs to wee during the walk. If the boy allows your son to watch him then this would be great but even if he doesn't you can tell your son that this boy is a big boy because he is weeing in the wood rather than wetting his pants. Then ask your son if he would like to try being a big boy too.

If he still wets his pants:

Take spare clothes, wipes and a towel with you and change him in the woods. This might help convince him that it would have been just as easy to wee in the woods. If this doesn't work the first time then try making him carry his wet clothes home with him in a see-through bag.

I don't know if this is possible but if you can have him go with another male and let him show your son how it is done. Maybe he will get the idea then. Or bring another male on your walk with you and your son and when make sure that they both need to go and let the other male show your son that it is okay to use the tree if he really needs to go. If he sees another male using the tree he might catch on that it's okay only in emergancies. If you can't do that then maybe try to stay closer to home so that way when he needs to go you can just run home and let him go. Being that he won't use a tree he might not do this but if you can bring a container or something with you so he can go in. If you have any pull ups or nappies then take them with you and when he needs to go change him into that let him go in that and when he is done put his regular underwear back on and put the pull up or nappy in a bag and throw it in the trash when you get home. You could also get him one of those porto potty things that folds up and it fits in a diaper bag that you can buy liners for and have him use that. I hope I helped you guys out a bit.

first of all you have a very clever child- at 3 to be poty trained is brilliant!!!

ok, it isnt easy for a lad when there isnt a male around to guide him. you are right not to put him back into nappies as hes gone this far without being in them, you dont want him to get used to being back in them.

Does your son not have an uncle or maybe a grandad that could possibly help him through this. if not then maybe (i know this sounds silly) but see if you can get him to try pee up a tree in the garden or something so he feels a little more comfortable and if he refuses to go then at least the toilet is close.

I know its hard because us women cant show them how its dont in the woods, but maybe bribe him with sweets or a packet of crisps when he needs to go. or.....

work out a little sign on a piece of paper and make him see that when he sees this sign, hes allowed to pee, so when he needs to go you can pull out this piece of paper and put it on a tree so he gets used to the idea. i know it sounds silly but you have think how he thinks and everythings a game at this stage. you can make up rules that when he pees he gets a treat.

it is also a hard thing for the boy aswel so just give him lots of encouragement and keep with the games and fun so he'll go. Dont think that if he gets used to it now he wont grow out of it- who cares!! men still pee in woods now.

Obviously you are not daft, so no point saying shorter walks etc. My little girl refused to go outside until we went camping and I had to go in the bushes on a long walk. Seeing me was enough to convince her that it's o.k if you're desperate or she'd have to hold it. Maybe you could try that!!
I know this sounds harsh but do you run him home as soon as he's wet? Getting him to complete the walk wet might convince him thats it's not such a great idea! Good luck!

You have done a fantastic job of getting him dry so well done!! Having done this I would think it would be okay to use a pull up just for out walking, explain that if he does feel the need to go it's okay, he won't feel wet, and it's just to make it more enjoyable for him. It's not a step backwards, just a way of making him comfortable. While he's still only not yet 3 he associates going to the toilet as private and that's good, Believe you me when he's 18 and bladdered, he won't care!!

Well I don't have any good advice for you. But I do have a funny story to tell.I drive a truck across county and am gone a lot. My only son ( have 3 girls) who is the youngest child recently went on a car trip about 2 hrs to my parents house. On the way he told me he had to go potty so I stopped beside the road and let him out. Now when I pulled his pants down to let him pee, I couldn't get him to stand up. All he wanted to do was squat like the women in the house does. I kept saying no son boys don't pee like that, he'd just look at me with a real questioning look on his face. Finally I gave in and told him to just go, but you and me little guy is going to have to spend more "guy" time together. Told my wife about it and I thought she was going to laugh her butt off.

Perhaps you could start at home. Do you have a garden? Perhaps make a game out of it when he needs to go at home by putting his potty outside and getting him to use it there, then perhaps trying to make a game of him peeing on a bit of grass. Then you could do it next time you're out. I think if you are expecting him to stress then it makes you stressed about it more and he won't want to go.

Another idea is that you can buy porta-potties which fold up and can go into a baby bag and you can get liners (like nappy sacks) which go in them. Tommee Tippee make them. Perhaps he'd be happer with one of those.
