once a dog gets the taste for killing chickens it is hard to stop them. You need to separate them in a pen. Build a large chicken yard for the chickens with chicken wire and let the dog run. If you decide to let the chickens run outside the chicken yard put the dog in a pen, not the chicken pen either. Chickens will go back to their pen to roost late in the afternoon.

Hello =)
Well, the only way to prevent that is not to let your chickens roam free. Or, chain your dog while they do. Dogs naturally will eat chickens, and this has always been a problem on farms. You need to fence off a small area for the chickens, or keep the dog chained. The benefits of free-roaming chickens are great, no doubt, but then, you need to keep your dog on a chain while he's outside.
Namaste,

Build a chicken coop. They need protection from chicken hawks, coyotes etc.
It can be done very simply with 2x4 boards and some chicken wire. Get a simple design and get to stapling the wire to the boards.
Look online for some examples.
Or do what I did. I let the dogs out and put my chickens in the kennel. Worked really well they even layed in the dog house with hay in it.
I too was unprepared for my poor chickens...What was I thinking?

yopu will never break the dogs from killing them. they might do right for a few days, but unfortunately, they will always start back killing them. it's just in their nature, they cant stop it.
one time i tied a dead chicken around one of our dogs neck and left it on there for several days. the chicken was stinking ,flies swarming it. when i took it off, next day, dog killed another chicken. i have tried spanking, scolding, you name it. nothing works.
only solution is, build a coop and keep the chickens seperate, or get rid of the dog.
some dogs kill them , some dont. figure out which dog is doing the killing. decide if you want to to get rid of the dog or the chicken. this is if you decide to not build coop.

Keep your dogs in the house, and let your chickens out when the dogs are in.

Try to catch your dog just after he has killed one of the chickens and take the dead chicken and beat him with it over and over. This will make him scared of the chickens and will leave them alone.

cover them in gravy first. ummm usually once a chicken killer always a chicken killer find a way to keep the dog away from the chickens or the dog will eventually rid you of all of them and problem solved.
