My BT Freestyle 2500 phones are connected up in the same way they have been for the past 2 years. However, overnight they have stopped registering a dial tone and I cannot make or recieve calls using them. I use TalkTalk as my line provider and I have broadband through the same company. I have tried unplugging them and plugging them back in, using both the power and the phone lines simultaneously and alternately. I have tried with and without the modem plugged in. Any help kindly appreciated.

It could be a problem with the equipment at the exchange. Contact TalkTalk and they will contact BT Residential on your behalf. Don't phone BT yourself. BT will then send out someone from their Openreach division to fix it, but all enquiries and billing are through TalkTalk.

Also, here's a link to some troubleshooting info on the TalkTalk HelpDesk web page.

At the end it says -

If there is still a problem with your test socket, or your phone does not have a test socket and looks like the picture below, then please call our Faults Team on 0800 049 5050 or Contact Us, where our customer service advisors will be more than happy to help you. If we arrange a site visit and the engineer finds a fault with your equipmment or the fault is a result of any DIY or caused by yourself, TalkTalk will charge for the visit.

Also, here's a link to a contact us form.

To save money, if you have an old fashioned phone lying around that doesn't need a power-source (rather than a cordless one), or can borrow one, I would try that before calling TalkTalk. This would tell you whether its the phone. You can check whether you get a dial-tone.

If you have another phone(or can borrow one),try connecting it to your main socket with all your other equipment disconnected. If you can get dial tone on the other phone then the fault is on your equipment. If you still do not have Dial Tone you have a line fault and you need to report that to your service provider.
