I want to increase the size of my kitchen and possibly another adjacent room. Without getting a contractor to give an estimate how can i roughly estimate it myself?

Well about two years ago we asked a (low end) builder in Florida
the price per square foot they were building for. Then it was about $90. per sq. ft. But houses in our subdivision are selling for $165.00 to $190.00 per square foot. But this is Florida and just now everything is high.

Just call a builder in your area and ask for a per square foot price.
Of course kitchens and bathrooms are more because of plumbing and electrical.

Use $120. per square foot and see what you get. New York, Florida, California would be highest I think. If you are in the Midwest prices are much lower.

Go to the menards. Back by the lumber desk there is a little kiosk with a project estimator program on it. It's touch screen so it's easy to use. Just follow the prompts and it'll give you an accurate materials cost.
