I think it's because no one wants to think of the reality of death and the afterlife. People become to comfortable in their worldly existence, they don't plan for the life after death.
They don't want to hear it. They basically live their lives in denial of the reality of Heaven and Hell.
Most people think too highly of themselves and believe that God would not send them to Hell. He doesn't in a sense because we prepare our Hell in the afterlife by how we live here on earth. We send ourselves there by our faith and how we use our will in the light of that faith.
How do you plan for the next life? By living for God in your earthly life, by doin His will here on earth.
Penance, penance, penance!

Congratulations! You have asked one of the very questions I always asked and never got the answer that satisfied me until I met Jehovah's Witnesses. I always thought to myself that surely SOMEBODY was evil enough to go to hell from the get-go! And not one funeral I ever heard did anyone say to the people there "yeah, John was a jerk. He hurt people, he stole from everyone, and he was bad all the way around. I'm sorry to say this today, but John is in hell now." LOL If everyone goes to heaven or hell when they die, and you are Christian and believe in the resurrection, what would be the POINT of a resurrection if you've already gotten to where you were going? You might contact your local Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses, and tell them your question. I did, and I was surprised at what I learned. When you die, you are just dead. Your 'soul' doesn't go anywhere... except back into the memory of God, where He keeps it until a resurrection. Learn more from Witnesses in your own area. They will be happy to show you in your own Bible the answers to questions such as yours! Good luck!

They say whatever they think they family wants to hear. Besides, I have attended funerals where according to scripture the person would be in hell, but the out for the preacher is the bible says that only God can judge so they merely say they have no answer and just believe in a just and righteous God, then they proceed to talk about all the good the person did, never the bad.

They are trying to comfort the mourning family. At a funeral I recently attended they said that "Mrs so and so was a saint and that when she drew her last breath, God paused, and it didn't matter what was going on in China or Africa, he watched as his saint died." That made me very angry. Why would the death of an old, white baptist woman be any different then the death of a starving child in Africa? The point is that things are said to comfort the loved ones of the dead. Sometimes, those things don't always work.

To ease the grief of the living. It makes people feel better to think their loved ones are in heaven. Personally, I don't discuss such things at funerals. I find modern day funerals to be rather tacky when it comes to this sort of thing.

Only a person's friends come to the funeral and they want to think the best of the departed.
You might watch the paper for comments on Saddam's funeral to see what is said about him.

Funerals aren't for the dead, they're to comfort the living and most people are Christians so they say the person is in heaven because Christians find that comforting.

when I die, my Eulogy is gonna say something like:
she was an apostate, and a sinner, she knew the truth, and rejected it, so now, although I'd like for her to be in peace, we all know she's burning in the flames of eternal hellfire.
yeah, that would be awesome, then, I want a magic button being pushed, and my coffin starts to flame up.
sweet....what a way to go.

That is so terrible. In my believe, neither is true. They are in the ground dead until the ressurection. Then they are judged and the ministers of the church of God say so too.
