The dog I currently own is a pit bull mix, and he was not the first dog I've ever owned. He was as easy to train as my other dogs, if not easier. I don't see any problem with you getting a pitbull or it being your first dog. Get ready, alot of people are anti-pitbulls, and you are going to get a lot of comments about how mean and agressive they are. Of course, since so many people believe this, then owning a pit bull will probably deter anyone from breaking into your house. I got my dog from the pound (where there are TONS of pits and a lot of them are VERY sweet). He is friendly towards people, good with all the neighborhood children, and likes most other dogs. The only real problem I've had is that when he meets other pitbulls, both dogs become extremely aggressive and try to get at each other. Simple solution: I keep my dog on a leash and don't let him interact with the other pits.

Please go check out your pound/SPCA to look at the pit bulls. There are so many there that could use a good home. You sound like you are willing to put in the time and effort to take good care of a dog. Those dogs at the pound could really use someone like you!

The Pit Bull we have now was my brother's dog who past away. He was my brother's first dog and his saving grace through hihs illness. Pit Bulls are great dogs if raised right and socialized. Our Pit Bull loves everyone and everything. They are terriers so they do have energy and like any terrier can be bull headed. But they are not the monsters that the news media makes them out to be. They are very loyal and dedicated to their family and owner so they will do whatever it takes to please the one they love. It is important as with any dog that they receive the proper exercise and training. Everyone that has met our Pit has fallen in love with him and the breed and I know of five people after meeting him have gone and got one. You have to be a responsible and dedicated owner. They do need lots of time and patience with training. They are not naturally aggressive but can be destructive if you do not give the the time they need. Our Pit is now 4 years old and is completely dominated by my younger Lab. It is all in how they are raised and socialized. You have to be stronged willed just because of the terrier in them, if you let them walk on you they will. I would advise to buy the puppy from a reputable breeder one who loves the breed and is not into the fighting lines. Also read books on the breed there are several out there. And make sure you are willing and devoted to putting the time into the puppy. They are great, loyal, loving and devoted dogs if raised and trained right.

I have never owned a Pit Bull and I'm sure many people have and say they are wonderful dogs.
But i just want to let you know whats in all the news at the moment over in England.
There was a pet pit bull who belonged to a man, his dog mauled a 5 year old, beautiful little girl to death. The girl did not provoke it or do anything.
All Pits are born with fighting instinct and this shows sometime in their life. They were bred to be aggressive and fight and you can never take this out of the dog!
I dont want to put you off them, but i wanted to let you know what they can be like. It may differ in America but i dont know.
There are so many other breeds out there and i suggest you should do a bit of history on this breed and other breeds.

Pits can be wonderful dogs. Then again, they can be nightmares. If you have the time and patience to train it correctly, there should be no problem. But make sure that you can meet both parents before buying the dog, bloodlines are important, inbred puppies aren't what you're looking for. If I were to walk into a yard looking for pit pups and mom and/or dad are barking like they want to tear my throat out, I'm not interested in the pups. To have a family pet pit bull, you have to treat it like a family pet. Oh, and also, don't forget, your dog isn't the only one to worry about. One of my friend's dogs just got in trouble for something he didn't do, but since they knew where one of the 3 or 4 white pits in the neighborhood lived, they decided to railroad him. They've got a bad reputation that they don't deserve, any dog that's praised for attacking other dogs or killing animals is going to do just that for attention.

the question is not whether pit bulls are a good breed or not, it is: are you going to be a good owner?... pit bulls are complicated in that they are an auditory breed, this is why they so often end up as fighters. once you have hit your dog (to correct a bad behavior) or even tapped him on the nose, he will become hyper sensitive and take the frustration he feels out onto someonelower than he is on the pecking scale. However, if you are willinig to spendlots of time training your pit, they can be just as good a companion as a retriever.
please consider the time you will have to spend training your dog before you buy or adopt one, neglect in the animals needs will result in the injury of an innocent person.

yes there great dogs. i have one right know. and ive owned 2 others. the one i have now likes kids, adults, dogs, cats, and other animals. he like everyone and everything. him and the other 2 that i owned never bit anyone or anything. yes it was my first dog. they are very enegetic dogs. and love to play. and eat. lol. American Pit Bull Terriers are not Golden Retrievers. The best Pit Bulls are versatile working dogs, capable of learning a great deal, but they have an independent mind of their own and are not pushovers to raise and train. They can be manipulative, and many are willful, obstinate, and dominant (they want to be the boss) and will make you prove that you can make them do things. You must show them, through absolute consistency, that you mean what you say. there great dogs u should get one!!!!!!

I am not to sure about american pit s they get kinda big, I have owned, bred and raised red nose pits for about 6 years now and they are the best dogs I have ever had, I have owned rotts (which I also bred for a short period) and I grewn up around schnauzers and beagles and the red nose pits i own I wouldnt trade for any other dogs, they are extremely loyal and loving, if they are raised and trained with love and exteme patience. they are hard headed and take time in house breaking and training. mine are amazing with kids, when my daughter who is 11 now is sick my female dog will not leave her room she sits in her door way and gaurds her. she sleeps in the same bed with her and when my dod is not home on the week ends she still sleeps in her bed. I high recommend them as family pets if that is how you intend on raising them, my only warning is society, they dont like pits if you have read any of the articles on here about Sabbath the pit wrongly accused of the attack on the husky, well I am his owner and can tell you from experience that people in general stick the that damn stereotype of pits are fighter even if you dont teach them that I thought theh same thing about that until I owned one, then two, then 13 pups the 1st time, 13 the 2nd time and 9 the 3rd time. they are wonderful animals, treat them lovingly if you do decide to own one.

Are you buyng a pit bull as a puppy or adult and are you getting it from a shelter?
Ok so first things first, I have never had a pit bull myself but I know (and you should know too) that in Canada all Pit Bulls have to be LEASHED AND MUZZLED when outside. Pit bulls tend to need very strong-willed owners with experience to show them who is the boss. I honestly don't think they are good beginer dogs because they often need lots of obedience training, and also training to get used to a muzzle. Pit bulls are exelent gaurd dogs but most don't take well to children. Pit bulls are somtimes unpredictable, I have seen ones in humane societys that look peacefully napping and then when you go past its cage they just up and bark like crazy!

so If you are interested in gettig one of these dogs, please consider the time and training you will have to spend with your buddy in order for her to be a happy, healthy, and non-dangerous dog.

I own a pit bull. He is a service dog. He gose out in public almost everyday. Never had any trouble. I have had people come up and try to ick or hit him one man tried to let his GS attack him. I have been told by people who are holding little toy dogs that bark and grawl and try to bite evryone that gose by, I have a dangerous dog and why is it out in pulbic. Luckly in this town there are laws protecting service dogs and I turn in every person who tries to hurt my dog. Pits are a great dog to have. They need training, more than most breeds. Never let them run free anywhere except in your yard. Watch when kids are around, though that is true with any large breed of dog, They are stonger than most breeds and can hurt a small child just playing.
