In simple terms the difference with using HD more of the little dots that make up a picture, and thus a better picture. Most Cable companies have about three levels of quality, analog (which will go away in 2009) Digital and HD. As long as they can charge extra for the digital and even more for the HD they will do so. They have an investment in equipment but like everything else, charge what the traffic will bear. To get HD off the air, the set needs to have a HD tuner and an antenna, in some locations even rabbit ears will do the job. Satellite is already digital, but you have to pay extra for HD. So if you select Cable or Satellite, their equipment will act as the tuner for your TV. BUT in the case of Cable, many of the new TVs on the market will take the signal from the cable and process it for you, without using the cable Co's box. The TV guide supplied on some sets may require the Cable Box because of a side deal the Cable people have with TV guide. Your set may tell you it will do the TV guide thing but it may not work without the box.

HD stands for high definition. A tv that is called HDTV or HD-ready means it can display HD signals. HD signals are displayed in 480p, 480i, 720p, 1080i, & 1080p. The higher the number the better the resolution (picture quality). In order to receive HD signals you need a HDTV, HD receiver from your cable company, and an HD antenna to get local high def channels. And yes, picture quality is much better especially in 720p & 1080p.
