I have a 4 month old kitten who we've had since a week before xmas and a 2 yr old cat (both males). They get on very well but as you'd expect, the kitten wants to play all the time. When they are using their back feet, are they just playing? The 2 yr old has just started wrapping his front paws around him to get hold of him or he holds him down on the ground. There's no noises usually though. They bite each other a bit too.I just don't want either to get hurt! Are they just playing?

your cats love each other and the older one is teaching th eyounger one how to hunt and how to catch things and how to mate with another kitty later--and how to wrestle.
they are having kitty fun.

Many cats will play like this yes. The thing to remember about many animals is that a lot of play mimicks fighting and hunting. Why? Because in the wild play is how the young develop these skills for later in life.

Don't worry, you will be able to tell when the tone turns serious. Just like the difference between when children play and someone takes it to far.

yes, they are just playing, my 1 year old male cat always does this to my puppy and bites his neck.

its just like play 'mating'.

if your 2 year old is unneutered then it is likly he will get very rough with the kitten, prehaps a little too rough but if they do get along, then the 2 yr old wont cause any perminant damage.

cats and dogs are able to recongnise 'babies' and only take it as far as the the baby can go. they recognise this because the kitten (or puppy) will let out a loud high pitched scream if it is in any real pain:)

Yes they are just playing but it does get to the stage when the older cat says i have had enough and this is when you have to intervene and seperate them. I have 3 cats and 1 kitten and they are always playing and it does look rough and i do want to seperate them but i dont as the kitten understands when she has pushed my older ones to far. Your kitten will know when to stop and leave well alone trust me after 3 cats all from kittens i know what i am talking about. Good luck.

You have two males together - bound to have trouble, it will only get worse as the kitten gets older especially when it starts puberty.

Have you already newted older cat? even so there is a chance he will not tolerate the little one around and you may end up witnessing a fight to the death, especially if one of them has siamese in them.

However I am not a cat expert and they could get on well together eventually especially if you get them both newted, I think you will know if you are going to have a problem.

Are they vocal in their fighting yet? Once that starts you can be pretty sure they don't like each other.

Good Luck

Just playing I think. I have a 3 year old and an 8 month old (females) and it took forever for the older one to play nice with the kitten....so be patient and watch to be sure no blood comes of their play!

I have a bother and a sister cat that are both 3 years old (still kittens at heart) and they play fight just the way you describe. even if they growl, no harm might occer. but if you feel that one is being too rough, trust your insticts. safe is better then sorry. daily fights are ok but if they are fighting when ever they make eye contact, then something's up. but it could just be the normal sible fued. just go with what you really think is going on

i also advise you to talk to a vet, most vets also know behaviors of animals too.

i have 3 kittens under the age of 1yr and they all do that when they play. My previous cat used to do that until she was about 5 yrs old.

Yes, older cats do like to play too. If the older cat wasn't playing, he would growl at the kitten to chase it away, maybe attack a few times it would get the message.

I think it's at 8 weeks, kittens typically wrestle, roll and bite - doesn't matter how old the other one is...and Yes, they are just playing - Until you hear a hiss and growl, they're both just having some fun!! What else do they have to do...??

They are just playing at this point in time. I have three cats, none the same age. They play at times, but the older one gets tired of playing and will slap and hiss at the other two. You will know when they are not playing.
