I have nothing against policemen in general, I have 2 extended family members who are. I've just noticed a sense of power and control coming from some. Again- I'm NOT anti-policemen!

I'd like to believe that all policemen serve and protect, as well as all clergymen, teachers, and anyone in a position of authority. Unfortunately, reality is that there is no fail safe. You will always encounter those who abuse their power, and/or are unethical in general. Though standards and psych evaluations help rule out some, there will always be ones that slip through the cracks.

I think that they do the best job they can ... under the circumstances!

God bless your family members who are "on the job" Policemen/women have the toughest job out there! May they always finish their shift with the same number of working body parts they started it with!

It's a difficult job ... one part counselor, one part mediator, one part advocate, one part politician, add to that they are always under public scrutiny (what other job has 100,000 "supervisors" on the job 24/7).

In police work you have a small fraction of a second to react to a situation ... your detractors have all day to think of alternatives to your procedure!

Think they come off "heavy handed" Walk a mile in their shoes! Everytime they pull a car over for a "routine traffic offense" they could be confronting a FELON! You bet they are controlling! It's the only way they stay ALIVE!

For all it's faults, I would be a cop, but for colorblindness! The only way I would qualify as a member of a police department would be to grow a fur coat and learn how to detect drugs by smell!

95% of the police officers do. There is always that five percent that are not made fo rthe job but do it anyways.

One thing you have to realize when looking at LE is they never know who they are dealing with, Many times and officer may be alone, or there may be two. Either way, you are often dealing with situations where you are outnumber by a great deal. Maintaining control of the whole situation is vital for safety.

I do have to admit, it is tough sometimes to turn that controlling personality off at the end of the day. Also, you also don't know what the officer may have witnessed that particular day. i have seen accidents where people were dead on the scene. I have witnessed people die at the scene before EMS arrives. I've seen children dead. You just never know what they encountered that next day.

Think about this. Say and officer comes from a traffic accident where a child was not buckled in properly. Then he pulls you over, and your three year is just sitting in the backseat. He/ she is likely to come down on you a little harder than if you were their first stop of the day.

Serving and protecting is not what LE does. Law Enforcement is what LE does. If a man has a gun to your head, we are not commissioned to go in their and die for you. Most will do everything in their power to stop that person, and will likely risk their lives in doing so. But, there are many times when officers are called off by those from above them. The same is true for firefighters as well. There are many times where they know there are people in the building, but are stopped from going in to save them because it is too dangerous. To my knowledge, only the secret service is in place to actually take bullets for people.

Most officers go into that line of work with the notion to do good for everyone. Courts, internal politics, and government generally change that over time. Being an ex-officer I knew some who got into the business to meet women or some who were on a power trip. Most of these were afraid of their own shadows and no help in a crisis.

to be honest, most cops take the job because it pays good, offers security, benefits, a decent pension etc. Now they type of people who are drawn to that type of work are often law abiding, honest decent people. The very selection process usually weeds out people not cut out for the work and that usually leaves a person who is there for there own reasons, but will also protect and serve faithfully. There are hundreds of thousands of cops in thousands of titles in this country and 99.9% are decent, hardworking people. You got a better chance of a plumber or McDonalds clerk ripping you off or harming you than a cop.

Unfortunately, when a person is put in a position of power and being in charge and being the one evryone turns to to help them and solve their problems...it becomes part of their nature and its hard to turn it off. A cop is a cop 24 hrs a day. Very few jobs mandate you take police action 24/7. In most staes cops are required by law to take action if a crime is comiitted in their presence. A cop is always a cop.

I'd like to believe that ALL law enforcement officers went into the job for the right reasons, but I think a small minority of them quite like the idea of the uniform and the power they can wield. Unfortunately it's this minority that give the force a bad name in some parts of the country/world.

No, thay do not, I think most of them are on a power trip & don't abide the idea that they are civil servants & supposed to protect & serve. Unfortunately these are the ones that ruin the reputations of the good officers in law enforcement.

It is important to understand that not everyone gets into law enforcement with the intent to commit crime or abuse it is just something they are led to through bad dealings. With power comes the need for true commitment of duties. So, yes there are those that are led astray and it is no different than with any other profession. Look at our chruches. Bottomline is look to the mass not those few.

As with anyone in a position of authority, Im sure that there are some police officers that abuse it. But I would like to believe that most are honest, law abiding citizens who have joined to serve their country, same as our military.

not really because we still live in a society where they still judge. don't get me wrong we have some good cops, but there are others who push things under the rug.
