A lot of modern language teaching has been incorporating results of pragmatic research, including speech act theory. The "Threshold Level" language learning objectives as formulated by the Council of Europe in the 1970s and was mainly based on speech acts. Since 1975, Threshold Level objectives have been formulated for Basque, Catalan, Czech, Danish, Dutch, English, Estonian, French, Galician, German, Greek, Hungarian, Italian, Latvian, Lithuanian, Maltese, Norwegian, Portuguese, Romanian, Russian, Slovene, Spanish, and Welsh.
