if the lady you worked with had a 38lbs cat and it wasn't fat. she did not have a dsh or anysort of domesticated cat, except for a main coon, but they usually are around 30lbs max. she had a bob cat or puma kitten! if your boy is 5lbs at 10 months or so, he should finish out at a healty 8-10 lbs. anything over that and you need to look at his diet. overweight male cats are at a high chance for fatty liver disease and becoming ureathrally blocked. each cat differs but the average weight for the average house cat is between 7-12 lbs. he could just have a longer tail. whatever it is, i'm sure he's awful cute.

Asking how big a domestic cat gets is like asking how big a human gets. VERY hard to tell.

On AVERAGE, domestic cats will be between 7 - 18 lbs. If he is already close to 10 months he is nearly full grown.

And you refer to a cat as long, just so you know.

You should be able to slightly feel the spine and a LITTLE tiny bit the ribs in a cat of ideal weight. Your vet will be able to explain to you how to tell if your cat is healthy or not in regard to mass. Just ask him on your next visit.

I have a male neutered orange tabby. He is way overweight at 18 lbs!

If your boy goes over 12 lbs, start looking at his diet. Ask your vet about food changes. Sometimes that will help. If he's indoors only he may be even more disposed to be overweight.

I wish I'd known this when he was a kitten.

not sure, you can do some research though at the shelter I work at we have 3 orange tabbys and they are all big cats, not necisarilly fat but big cats. 38 lbs sounds kind of excessive. maybe 10-15lbs.

is your cats tail like a raccoon tail? is the fur on your kitty shaggy and longish?? is kitty's fur so soft it is incredible??
does he have huge paws??with fur under his paws??
maine coon kitties will grow to be the largest domestic kitties--they get up to 20 pounds--that is a lot of cat. there are no recorded mc cats over 20 pounds that i am aware of.
ragdolls are the heaviest breed of domestic cat--i believe they hang in a about 20 pounds. people tend to exaggerate the weight of the fish they almost caught and the weight of their pets--and underestimate their own weight. go figger.
there are sites on line regarding these breeds--or any breed you wish to research--look on line under the name of the breed and you will learn sooo much!!!! good stuff---and th ere are pix--i love cruisong cat breeder sites to see the pix of the young and older members of the breed--very educational.
good luck and have fun with your kitty.if you do have a maine coon mix, you hae a wonderkitty who is so dog-like and loyal--good companion.enjoy kitty.
