Are you familar with the word hysteric? Or have yo ever heard of Psychogenic purpuras. Some wounds are self inflicted, but some seem to come as mind over matter. The people involved seem to have been tormented souls. This is interesting to look up on the internet. One Saint, was even said to have had lilies that would grow out of her hands. And it is strange that lilies bloom on her grave even in the winter.

That could be answered only by someone who physically carries the Stigmata wounds and yes, you are right as to what they are supposed to represent.
