There are a lot of good areas within Southern California. It really depends where you can get a job.

The LA area is very diverse, and has many neighborhoods in it. While LAUSD has its problems, there are still some excellent schools within the system.

There are a lot of nice cities in Orange County: Brea, Fullerton, Yorba Linda, Huntington Beach, Irvine, too many to name here. There are a lot of good school districts, too. And it is nice being so close to Disneyland.

If you want to get the most bang for your buck, consider the Temecula area, in Riverside County. Schools are very good, and it's a growing area.

San Diego county has excellent weather and good schools, but overinflated real estate prices and a relatively soft job market. It's great if you're already in, though.

Ventura County is nice, with cities like Simi Valley, Moorpark, and Thousand Oaks. Most areas are just 30 minutes from the beach.

Hope this helps with the search.

ncgirl;

Of the two cities you mentioned Huntington Beach would be the better choice. It is a reasonably clean, safe modern area. The school system is very good. You will find homes cost quite a bit more than they do in most parts of North Carolina. Huntington Beach is in Orange County and you would find most areas there to your liking. Santa Monica is an older town, with most of the problems that accompany older towns It's also kinda "ultra lefty" if you know what I'm inferring.

if you are decided on so cal. then i think a beach community would be best. though just to warn you california is very expensive, in terms of homes, clothes, food, school, etc. Newport Beach is the best! not too crowded but it's a wonderful area. some good schools are Corona del mar high, a nationally ranked school and newport harbor high.
Laguna is okay but i don't recommend it. schools in huntington are more focused on athletics like surfing and so are the people. They are more casual beach bums rather than the classy preps of newport.
I think anaheim, beverly hills, LA, santa monica are all too crowded so yeah.
For Nor Cal, Palo Alto is the absolute best, no doubt. It's near perfection. best school is Castilleja, a private school for girls. Everyone there gets into Stanford but only a few go since a lot of them go to Ivy leagues. best public is Gunn high, which is the number one public school in all of california and i think 15th or something in the country.
hope this helped, good luck!

I moved to LA from Philadelphia 9 yrs ago!

I would look into Santa Monice (Expensive) or the Redondo Beach (More affordable).

Los Angeles area is great! It is a wonderful fun City. Spend a lot of time researching areas to live that work for your lifestyle.

It depends on your Budget, avoid the "Valley" area if possible. Very hot in the summer and extremely over populated!

Good Luck!

Sounds like you want to stay by the ocean. Check out Irvine. They have a good website to get you acquainted, and a fantastic community services section with lots of programs for your kids.

It's not right on the coast, but very close. The southern part of the city is pretty close to the beach, and there's lots of open space (parks, hiking and bicycling trails) in both the south and the northern areas.

I've lived in Huntington Beach before; there are good areas and bad, lots of strange city politics, and a track record for eminent domain that I found disturbing. My kids went to school there, but after we moved they closed the site, much to the distress of nearby residents who lived there to have a school nearby!

I am 33 and I was born in those area's. They are so more much worse than people think. People always think when they move out here..you are going to get what you see on TV. Its just not so. The gangs are horrible and most area's now a days are covered in grafetti. Everything is so over crowded its horrible.

There are some nicer area's in Riverside, Temecula, Murrieta, Menifee that I would suggest. The schools are newer and nicer as well for the kids

A small fixer upper house in a gang area starts about $450,000. It just goes up from there. H.B. would be considerably much more expensive than Santa Monica. Check realtor.com and it would also give you information about the area and neighborhood crime and schools.

Go to Los Angeles. I live in Boyle Heights and I really like it. There are schools everywhere, parks, stores, etc. Well I recommend around L.A. Like Montebello, East L.A., Boyle Heights, Whittier. If not, then go to other city's. Pico Rivera, Glendale, San Diego. This is all in Southern California. Well good luck.
