Have a chat with your local Green grocer, they are certainly available. If all else fails see a local farmer as they give them to cattle.

I don't know where you're at, but turnips are always available here in the south. They are always in the produce section of all the grocery stores right next to the rutabagas. By the way have you ever tried rutabagas? If you like turnips, you would probably love rutabagas. You just peel them, slice or dice them up and boil them until fork tender and season them with a little bacon grease and salt and pepper. You can buy both in the canned vegetable section of the grocery store too.

I live in Illinois and the produce section of every market in my area always has and does sell turnips. Occaisionally the quality is not quite up to snuff, but since turnips store well just like potatos they are available year round. The stores also used to sell Rutebegas - a turnip relative (larger with a yellow flesh and a stonger more buttery taste) but I can't say that all the stores have them all the time, maybe but I just don't look for them that often. If they have stopped carrying them I think that has to do with poor demand and the greater variety of fresh items competing for space.
I prefer mashed turnips to mahed potatos every time.
The farms near me used to grow fordhook lima beans that I could buy fresh, shell, and freeze, but I can't find them anymore. I have to buy frozen and only a few stores even carry those. Sigh......
Of course I can almost always buy those big giant "picture perfect" california strawberries that taste like styrofoam all year long ..... double sigh.........

I don't know, I've had problems finding turnips as well. I'm guessing that they sell out when it gets close to Burns' night, and had to make do with swede.
Brussels sprouts are delicious, but stay away from pea soup, especially if you visit Wells-Next-The-Sea.

You can get turnip at Tesco. The only thing is they are in the stew packs but if you like them that much you wont mind buying them. You could always make a nice stew.

It's hard to find them because of all the junk food out there! In the grocery store the biggest section is the junk food and the smallest section are all the health foods- tofo, veggies, and other stuff. This my friends is why America is WAY obese! Look in farmers markets or start growing your own garden! Good Luck!

I have never had a problem finding a turnip. They are always available at my grocers. Try a store that sells only produce. If you can find a rutabaga they are very similar in flavor.

Try looking for Rootabegga (speeling isn't correct). Turnip sometimes goes under this name too.
