we have had a couple of staffys in the family and both were loving, well behaved pets and no more likely to bite than any other dog.
I believe that they get a bad press because they are confused with pit bulls and also that they seem to be the dog of choice for thugs.

I really wish all you peeps that keep referring to Staffordshire Bull Terriers as Pit bulls... THEY ARE NOT PIT BULLS.. Please get your facts right before answering questions about the Staffordshire Bull Terriers..

I would hate to see a SBT with the attitude, personality and temperament of either a Poodle, Border Collie, Yorkshire terrier or Jack Russell or Retriever etc.. if i did, then i would consider it a dangerous dog.

Staffies make Excellent pets,
They are better with people than most other dogs u will ever come across,
They can be a hand full around other dogs and cats (my 2 are good with other pets tho).
They make Crap Guard dogs coz they love people to bits.

for all you ignorant people the staffordshire bull is NOT a pit. they are loving adorable pets. i`ve got a 7 month old girl and she wouldn`t know how to attack anything. all dogs can be agressive killers i you train them the wrong way.

you will never find a more loyal dog than a staff. just make sure you buy from a reputable breeder.do NOT buy a cross breed. this is where the temperament issue arises and make sure its with all KC papers. visit lots of breeders and see the difference in the pups between the litters. and let the puppy choose you. the one that wants to come over to you and want your attention is the right one for you. don`t believe everything ignorant people say

to say all staffs are bad is like saying all people are bad. all down to personality via how you bring them up.

if you do decide on one, you`ll be one very happy chap. good luck

SBTs are great dogs, but like dogs of any breed or type, they have to be trained correctly and treated right.
You have to be prepared to handle a high prey drive, which does not mean he will be aggressive to people but to dogs and other animals.
I would also just like to add that when a story comes out from the press involving any pit bull type dog it cant be trusted. Most people cant tell a pit bull from a poodle and the bite stats are taken from either the victim or a witness. And, it is a proven fact that more than half of reported pit bull bites are from misidentification.

Edited to add: STs may not be "pit bulls," but they still fall under the "pit bull" type, at least they do in the USA. The pit bull bans include the Staffordshire Terrier.

Staffordshire Bull Terrier ARE NOT (at the risk of repeating myself) ARE NOT PITT BULLS they are 2 different dogs

If you check out the NHS figures more children are bit by labs but the problem with Staffordshire Bull Terrier are they jaws lock and they are hard to get them unlocked. They are known as the nanny dog.

As long as you show the dog who is control and set boundaries there shouldn't be a problem.

We have a Staffordshire Bull Terrier and he is a good dog, loving and loyal. but do be prepared if you do get a pup they chew, ours chewed everything, my camera, reading glasses, remote control, table leg, my car seats etc etc. Also be careful round other dogs but if you socialise the dog early there shouldn't be a problem.

They don't need a lot of exercise. However, refrain from taking them out in the midday heat because they have soft palates and they have been known to collapse and chock.

My nephew who has serve learning disabilities and is in a world of own loves our Staffordshire Bull Terrier and in turn the dog loves him we (me, my husband, brother or his wife) have any problems leaving the dog with my nephew.

If you are planning to get one good luck.

There is a Staffordshire Bull Terrier rescue centre in Bolton and they have dogs all over the UK.

If you want the address or any more info email me tink6990@yahoo.com

Good luck

P.S deb_bow2006 please contact me re the problem you noted on your advice.

It may need chew sticks, rubber pull toys or bones etc. He is not being aggressive or nasty, the best way to explain it is like a child who is getting there first teeth and need a teething ring. Don’t make the mistake we did and give him an old shoe!!!!

When buying are dogs i went through the kennel club, hope this helps.

oh now you are askin a serious question, check out my avitar,, staffs are loyal very protective of the family, they are tenacious and fearless, boundless energy 24/7, you must be the master else don't bother,in the wrong hands like any other dog ,dangerous,my dog has only ever had to defend himself once, a pit bull attacked him whilst on a lead but hey it was over in seconds, needless to say the pitt got more than it and the owner bargained for,my dog had his dogs paw and nose in his mouth,if it had not been 4 my quick thinking and control of my dog the other was done 4.I'm not proud of that or big headed he was only protecting the two ladies who were walking him at the time, any hoo I digress, yes they do make fantasic pets, buddies only if you bring them up proper.the right input does it 4 me and I have grandchildren, other dogs in the family and he has no problems with either.if youve got patience and stamina then don't hesitate,as long as its from a k.c breeder.hope that helps.

Hi, I have had staffies for 13 years now when my 1st two staffies were 3 yrs old and 4 yrs old i became pregnant and had children and i had no problems there either - so IMO i would say they make a great pet. They are very loving and very loyal

I have also read that staffies have such a love and devotion for humans that you do not need to keep them with another dog for company as all they thrive for is our attention but i have always kept 2 together - NEVER 2 boys thou as they will fight.

It all comes down to the way you treat your dog and train them too.

I have 2 and a cross staff. They are wonderful with people and kids. Dubbed the "nanny" dog cos they so good with kids.
Mine are all rescue, the last one i had wasn't so good with other dogs, so thats the thing to look for, if you have a pup and you put in the training to socialise it with other dogs he should be fine. Also train for pulling on a lead cos he will become very strong.
But please give the rescues a thought, they are snowed under, and now with the pitbull incident too will get worse.
"bad owners not bad dogs" (email me if you want more info)

Personally, I have known more vicious LABS.

Most people don't know that the dog with the highest bite record is the cocker spaniel. yep, that's right, one of societies favorite little ball of fluff. But of course you never hear about that on the news.

Also most of so called "pit bulls" that attack people on the news ARE NOT PITS. You also never hear about all of the Therapy/search and rescue pit bulls. The media is looking for publicity, so they know that another pit bull attack will get the public talking and increase their ratings.

Also did you know that pit bulls were actually bred to be VERY people friendly? This is because they sick people who fought them needed to be able to go in and separate a fight without getting bit themselves

Most people don't know that the dog with the highest bite record is the cocker spaniel. yep, that's right, one of societies favorite little ball of fluff. But of course you never hear about that on the news.

Did you know that in the 1930's they became known as the "nanny dog" because of their extraordinary fondness of children.

I have worked at two boarding kennels in my life and have NEVER had a problem with ANY pit bull. i have received 9 bites. 5 from labs, 2 from cocker spaniels, 1 English setter, and a husky

HOWEVER!

Unlike the person below me said. THEY ARE NOT GOOD FOR THE FIRST TIME DOG OWNER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Note to MGHARRIS2: I am not an ignorant person. I know that there is really no such thing a "pitbull" but the term only refers to a group of 3 closely related breeds that were bred for the same purpose. The American Pitbull Terrier, The Staffordshire Bull Terrier, and The American Staffordshire Terrier. (With the exception of the Am Staff, which was derieved from the Staffordshire bull terrier because Americans favored a slightly larger dog) Some People are starting to classify the Americian Bulldog under the term "Pitbull" also.
