Earliest colour pictures were made by James Maxwell in the 1860's, by taking three identical black and white pictures through coloured filters, and then displaying the images together by projecting them with coloured lights.

First "all in one" colour film was Autochrome, 1907.

First colour film as we think of it today was Kodak Kodachrome, in 1935.

Although color photography was explored throughout the 19th century, initial experiments in color could not fix the photograph and prevent the color from fading. Moreover until the 1870s the emulsions available were not sensitive to red or green light.
The first permanent color photo was taken in 1861 by the Scottish physicist James Clerk Maxwell.
