Litter boxes need to be cleaned at least once a day. You can also add some baking soda to the bottom of the box before you put the litter in it. It will help absorb the smell but I suspect you are not cleaning it often enough and that is what is causing the problem.

Your litter boxes should be scooped everyday, emptied out, boxed cleaned and new litter added every week. Unless you are using Silica. EVEN if the litter doesn't smell, the box or the liner will absorb the foul odour and keep releasing it.
Cats that don't smell so much don't need such rigorous care.
If you are using any sort of high quality litter this will keep them clean. Silica is REALLY good but you have to take care of it EVERY single day. More enviromentally friendly things don't keep the smell down at all, like recycled paper, corn cobs or wheat.
Some cats smell more then others, try a higher quality litter, scented litter or additives, like arm & hammer.
Also, at this age your cats should be neutered. If not, the marking and scenting will stink to the high heavens.
Good Luck

First, are the cat neutered? If not, do so immediately or you will be sorry!!
Second, for every cat in the house, there should be a litter box PLUS one. It needs to be cleaned on a daily basis. many cats won't use a litter box if it's soiled.
Third, welcome to the smell of cat ownership. If you own cats, you WILL smell the litterbox.
You can help to eliminate the smell by using a lid, cleaning daily and hiding in a small confined area (maybe a bathroom or closet in the basement?). Also, a good odor absorbing litter should be used.

Most importantly, you have to clean the kitty litter regularly. We use a combination of "Small spaces" from Tidy cats and Fresh Steps, which clumps up the waste. That way you get the best of the freshness and the clumping. Also you can add the Fresh Steps crystals to keep the smell fresher, but it's a little more expensive.
Also you might try a covered kitty litter, it gives your cat privacy (they like that) and it keeps the smell contained.

You should get covered litter trays, neuter the cats (boys' pee smells awful if they're not neutered) and use wood based cat litter.
I tried the crystals but it goes all yellow and the pee stays at the bottom, so that every time they step in the tray they soak their paws in it and drag it around the carpet.
The BEST litter is either wood or corn based, because the pee forms lumps that you can scoop and throw it in the toilet, so that urine goes and doesn't linger on.
I tried using a different litter brand from my usual and I was horrified by the smell!!! NEVER use clay based products, they just smell AWFUL! I threw away two whole trays worth in two days as I was choking!
Check out the best, in my experience, below.
And scoop daily.

Buy deep litter boxes, and pour LOTS of scoopable litter in them. The deeper the litter is, the more there is to bury their waste with.
Cleaning it daily is the best way to keep it from stinking up the house, honestly.
Target sells a covered litter box that you can roll on its side to empty...it sifts the clean litter through a screen, and the clumps end up in a little drawer that you can pull out and dump into the trash. That works very well and isn't as offensive to clean as using a scoop.
Also, cats who eat fish tend to have stinkier poop than cats who don't. Stick to chicken or turkey for their wet food. And avoid dairy. That will help, too.
Good luck!

first of all you can switch your cat litter...
get one of the brands that has a special refreshing smell
or you can get an electric litter box where after the cat goes it drags the poo into a slot and sprays refreshener on it...
but those are very breakable
i would just switch cat litter
when you clean it you mean like you switch the litter??
well if you havent done this already when you change the litter wash the box with soap that will help to

First mistake male cat. The territory thing mixed with male, means they have to spray everything below 24" in the room, to let everyone know it's their territory. Get them neutered as soon as possible, if they've already started the marking thing it will continue.
Use clumping liter, it will help some.
I had 8 to start with, now due to old age, have 6, two males. one of the two was neutered before he came here and was young, doesn't spray at all, is probably the best (best manners) of the bunch. If you find they have already started marking the furniture, then check with janitorial supply places for a product called "push" it is an enzyme that helps remove the odor

I use Fresh Step cat litter and I have had two cats. My first cat was a female and no one ever knew I had a cat. Now I have a male cat, and you don't know I have one either. I clean his box every day too, sometimes, more than once a day. I find Fresh Step is the best one to trap odors as a cat owner.
