Companies are concerned with the protection of ITS assets. If your rights are protected, too, great. But, companies are not in the business of protecting you.
The laws that congress (federal, state, local governments) pass override that from time to time to protect the worker. OSHA, for example, has rules for workplace safety.
Now, as a worker in a company, the company has an obligation to protect your personal information to the extent possible. The second a new firewall is developed, it can be scaled by a creative hacker. Even knowing this, a company could be accountable if it KNOWINGLY allowed personal information to fall into the hands of someone who would take advantage of that information.
The Defense Department has been hacked. I'm not sure if Throckmorton & Brunhildahyde's Famous Widgets (TBFW, Inc.) is required to have a firewall or personnel screening that is more secure than that.

all personnel information IE sickness records, application forms, bank details, should be assigned to 1 or 2 members of staff, usually managerial staff or above depending on the size of the company, and can only be looked at for a purpose,IE filing a sick note or adding records to your file, not as and when they feel like it.you can also look at your file yourself at anytime .
hope this helps
