OK, there are a few steps here. I’ve referenced most of this from the book British Citizenship Test: Study Guide more details http://www.lifeintheuk.net
1. Your friend must apply for a Right of Abode visa to allow him to enter the UK.
2. Once in the UK your friend will need to stay in the UK for at least three years.
3. After three years he will have to pass the Life in the UK test. This will allow him to apply for settlement in the UK.
4. Once he has been granted settlement (sometimes called indefinite leave to remain), the he will wait another year.
5. Having held this status for at least a year, he will then be able to apply for naturalisation.
6. If his application for naturalisation is accepted then he will be invited to become a citizen and will need to attend a citizenship ceremony.
7. After attending his citizenship ceremony, he will be presented with his naturalisation certification. He can then use this to apply for a British Passport.
8. Passport applications can take months, but eventually after doing all these steps, you should get a passport in the post.

[edit] Issuing
In the United Kingdom, British passports (United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland) are issued by the Identity and Passport Service. In the Channel Islands or the Isle of Man, British passports are issued by the Lieutenant-Governor.
In British Overseas Territories, British passports are issued by the Governor. In Commonwealth or foreign countries, they are issued by the Passport Section of a British Consulate, Embassy, or High Commission.
At present holders of the following forms of British nationality can apply for a British passport:
British citizens (GBR)
British Overseas Territories citizens (formerly British Dependent Territories citizens) (GBD)
British Overseas citizens (GBO)
British Subjects (GBS)
British Protected Persons (GBP)
British Nationals (Overseas) (GBN)
The three-character codes appearing after each type of nationality above are the ISO/IEC 7501-1 machine readable passport alpha-3 country codes of such British passports.
No British national has a legal right to be issued a British passport, except for British Nationals (Overseas) who have an entitlement to hold a British passport under article 4(2) of the Hong Kong (British Nationality) Order 1986. All other British passports are therefore issued at the discretion of the government under the Royal Prerogative.
Right of abode, i.e., the right to enter and live in the UK freely, is only automatically held by British citizens, as well as by some British subjects and those other Commonwealth citizens who were patrials under the Immigration Act 1971.

I'm not an expert, but, I would have thought there shouldn't be too much of a problem. I know a few people who have residency rights in the UK who aren't even European. Your friend is married to a British national and that should be enough to gain him residency after a bit of paperwork.

what's the puzzling bit? sure, your passport is American, at no factor has it ever ceased to be American, once you re-enter the united kingdom you employ the line for the non-ecu voters It won't remember on your son what line you stand in because of the fact while you're on your guy or woman with him he will might desire to accompany you, no one is going to tutor around & say to you that your 3 hundred and sixty 5 days previous infant in a pushchair might desire to circulate interior the line with the different ecu voters & leave him unaccompanied. in the experience that your husband became with you re-entering into the united kingdom then your son might desire to circulate with him collectively as you're interior the non-ecu line yet once you're on your guy or woman that won't be able to happen. As your son is an American citizen with the aid of start he will additionally require an American passport to head into the U. S. you will possibly use his British passport to head into & go out the united kingdom and his American passport to head into & go out the US

There is a really easy way. Simply get a one-way ticket to france, jump in the back of any old truck and get into the UK that way, once you're there, simply say your claiming Asylum (Like most Eastern Europeans do) and the English system will let you in - that simple!
A lot of Polish, Romanian, umm pretty much most countries round there do it.

He would have to apply for a marriage visa and go through the selection process the same as everyone else.
After about a year he should get his 'permanent stay' visa and then he can follow the processes for citizenship and dual nationality if he wishes.
One word of caution...don't listen to ignorant racists who say it is easy...they are talking rubbish.
