There is no equivalent "agreed-upon" word for horse meat, though many English speakers call it "cheval", the French word for horse.

The American prejudice against eating horse (while eating other animals) makes little or no sense, particularly when you consider that a horse can live a long, productive life as a companion animal or work-animal, and then yield delicious meat at a ripe old age. Cattle are slaughtered young since their meat becomes less attractive to the American palette as they age.

(And I don't know what Bob ate in Italy, but it doesn't sound like horse meat, which is slightly sweet-tasting , & typically very tender!)

My guy had horse in Iceland. They called it horse. Its a very lean mean similar to beef and they didn't call it anything but what it was. But then snake is called snakemeet and buffalo is buffalo meat.. they just got different with deer and beef :-)

very chewy. I tried it in Italy in a panini sandwich with french fries and ketchup and mayo. couldn't even bite through it. Wasn't that good, either.
