I Know many people have been saying stress is the trigger but i dont think i'am stressed out.
I have been eating loads of crap for the last 18 months so i cant really pin point my trigger food, I do Glen Harrolds relation cd nightly as i find it helps me to sleep and have taken colofac in the past but it did nothing at all. I would really like to try herbel treatments and i will spend time looking online for those treatments.

Fennel and nettle tea I think are also good but teas on their own are not enough to fix the problem I think.

Are you getting the pain because you are constipated? If so, eating stewed fruit, prunes, a desertspoon of bran on your cereal every morning. Live natural yoghurt with fresh fruit. Drink plenty of water.

Your GP should be able to give you something to help with the pain and the over or under active bowel.

There are several self help things you could try (as well as above food items or by visiting the doc); from the health food shop these are:

Probiotics (friendly bacteria) some include a Prebiotic.
Lepicol (also contains friendly bacteria)
You may need to take a course for 2 to 3 weeks and as a precautionary aid a 1 week course once a month.

Oil of Peppermint tablets or capsules Obbekjaers is a good one.
Peppermint Complex or Bowel Essence (Flower Essence by Jan de Vries)

The people who work in the health food shops are usually quite helpful to chat to about your symptoms and can advise on their products and how they may be of help to you.

Hope you feeling better real soon. Good Luck

I had really bad IBS for about 15 years. Then I had three sessions of hypnotherapy. That was in October 2002 and I have never had an attack since. The hypnotherapy cost me £37 per session and it was some of the best money I have ever spent. I never found anything else that could help, whether food, drugs or anything. It was caused by stress, not diet, and so it was necessary to address the stress problem and learn more effective stress management techniques.

What you can do in the meantime is try a deep breathing technique I learned and this should help you:

Lying down on a bed or couch, breath in gently through your nose, hold the breath for a moment, then slowly and gently release it through your mouth, silently saying "relax" to yourself as you breath out. When you breath in, your tummy should be pushing out. When you breath out, it should be deflating.

Another thing you can do it to use Glenn Harrold's Complete Relaxation hypnotherapy tape or CD, preferably using headphones to get the full benefit of it. You may even be able to borrow this from your local library, which can probably order you a copy if it isn't in stock. Alternatively you can buy it - ask Waterstones or Smith's if they can order it for you, or else see if it's available online.

I have crohn's disease which is worse than IBS.I don't know what mediactions you are or are not on for yours but for the spasms you need to be taking something with an anti-infammatory like Asacol and for the spasms a muscle relaxer like flexeril really helps.I would stay away from the flavored tea because tea is full of caffeine and when the intestines and bowels are irratated you don't want to be consuming caffeine.Try drinking just soup broth or boil hot water and put some bullion cubes in beef or chicken once your stomach starts to settle try a few salteine crackers.and really you should be seeing a doctor if your not already.IM me if you need further advice.I have had crohn's disease for 13yrs and have been on many medications and special diets i would be happy to share my information with you my sister has IBS also so i am pretty familiar with it.

Stress is not the only trigger. I have IBS and sometimes get it so bad like you. I had food sensitivity testing at a health food shop and it turned out yeast was the trigger for me.

If you are having a bad attack, get some Buscopan, analgesics and Colpermin.

Make sure you talk to a pharmacist when gettin them as there are certain restrictions such as you cant take colpermin if you are allergic to peanuts.

Hot water bottle also helps, and drink plenty of water too.

Well there are a few things you can try in the meantime until you get all of your test results back. One, if you haven't yet, you can try imodium (2 tablets immediately, then 1 after each loose bowel). Two, you can try metamucil. It is recommended to spread metamucil out 2 hours from other medications. Most people think it is mostly for constipation, however, it also helps with diarrhea. My brother has IBS and he tried many medications. I recently got him to try metamucil. He started slow (as to minimize side effects) and gradually worked his way up to a dose he was comfortable with. After about 1-2 weeks, he started to notice the effects. He said his bloating and cramping has decreased a lot, and he's not in as much pain. He said it also is helping with his diarrhea.

I know how you feel...

i tried everything and avoided all the usual problem foods and nothing worked.

Recently I joined slimming world and been sticking to the diet and my ibs has completely disappeared, you should check it out. I think it is a result of eating the right foods together for your body to digest. For example, not eating meat and potatoes together in the same meal, extra fibre and less carbohydrates.

If you google slimming world you can get more info from the website and im sure there will be a class near you. Its really helped me, you should try it...plus youloose weight really quickly, feel great with extra energy and gain confidence. good luck!!

You have to know the cause of you IBS, the food that triggers it. For me I had noticed I had it when having nuts or ice cream on a hungry stomach, or sometimes when my feet felt cold. The only thing that helped me was a little bit vodka, (a quarter shot), that heated me from inside, and instantly relaxed all this pain.

You can get medicine from the doctor which I found very effective.
I also find exercise really helps - even though I know it's the last thing you feel like doing, a brisk walk will help relax your body and mind.
