They have been banned in public places, under the Dangerous Dogs Act 1991, but not in Houses.

Areas which have passed breed specific legislation banning or restricting the ownership of Pit Bulls and "pit bull type" dogs usually include the American Staffordshire Terrier in this legislation.

No they aren't they are actually legal.
However Pit bulls are not allowed in the UK unless the breeders have loads of paperwork and documentation to allow legal breeding. There is a real problem with illegal breeding of dogs like staffs and pits. A couple of weeks ago a 5 year old girl was mauled to death after a illegal breeder's dog savaged her.
These dogs should be made illegal over here though!

Pit bull terriers are banned. Is an American staff a code for pit bull?

Yes they are banned.
The ban includes dogs of pit bull type.

AKC Amstaffs are registered by UKC as pit bulls.
How much closer in type can you get?

Yes there illegal,it doesn't stop people breeding them and owning them though you only have to open todays newspaper for that.
