I am redoing my kids' playroom. Currently we have Berber carpet in there, but it gets snagged on the edges of their toys plus it isn't the best surface for racing cars etc. So we want to put down a new floor but are unsure what to get. It needs to be reasonably priced. We will be selling the house in about 5 years, so it needs to be something that will hold up well to the children playing on it and yet retain value for when we sell the house. Any suggestions?

How about a cheap room sized area rug...... it will protect the carpet and you won't have to put in AstroTurf ? Just a thought!

Not sure if you're familiar with this, but how about cork floors? These are really durable and highly resilient, and has been used in commercial spaces for years.

In an article I read online:
"One commonly cited example is the Toronto Stock Exchange building. The cork flooring did not negatively impact the joints of traders who were up and about the livelong day. It also made for a more serene indoor atmosphere as opposed to most other traditional flooring solutions. During the 1950s, cork floors were installed in public spaces such as restaurants and gyms because people spent a lot of time standing in these places."

It's flat (good for racing cars), surface is not too hard (better for overly active kids), and will never dent as it will just ease back to it's original form even if you apply pressure on it. The company I work has some great prices on cork floors you might want to check out:

I would use laminate flooring, it is pretty tough, easy to install and inexpensive.
