I have Mono and my throat/ear/nose/face are in agonizing pain when I try to swallow or burp. The doctor prescribes Vicodin for pain relief, but it's not really working. I'm also on two other prescriptions (Methilprednisone and Amoxicillian). I'm supposed to have food with all of these meds, but if I can't swallow, what am I supposed to do? I'm very frustrated. I just want to eat something.

Can I take Advil to buffer the Vicodin? Should I go back to the clinic (of course it was an urgen care, not my regular dr.)? Will they think I'm some drug addict if I go in and ask for something stonger?

I'm at a loss, please advice.

Also, if you care, there's more about my pain here: http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index;_ylt=Agii0K0kUMIAOVaJT1VOP4_sy6IX?qid=20070105212035AAjaQHh

Thank you!!

Please do not take Advil to supplement the vicodin. Advil is an anti-inflammatory but you are already on a powerful steroid which should reduce the inflammation. Since its Sunday, I would say go back to the Urgent Care, however, you have to follow up with your own doctor. Your spleen could become enlarged and possibly rupture. Be careful, go back to the doc, hope you feel better soon.

You will be hard pressed to get anything stronger for mono unless you require hospitilization. I would advise you against using the Aleve along with the Vicoden, as Aleve's website does not suggest it unless directed by your doctor. The Vicodin already has acetominophen, which is in tylenlol and the Aleve has naproxen sodium. One thing you can do though, is ask for a stronger dose of of the pain medicine, like norco 10/325. The first number, 10, being hydrocodone, and the second number, 325, being the acetominophin. Two of those every 6-8 hours should do the trick.

1) I would not take the Vicoden if it is not helping.
2) Advil can help.
3) Gargle with viscous lidocaine or get Chloroseptic throat spray to numb your throat some before you eat or just for relief.
4) Popsicles.
5) Boost or some liquid supplement for a few days while you are not able to eat as much.
6) Soups
7) The meds should kick in a few days and then it should get easier.

If you are not feeling somewhat better in a week - go back to the doctor. It can take months to get over mono - but most of it is just feeling really tired, not all the symptoms you are having now.

if vicodin doesnt at least take the edge off enough for you to eat, then you've got problems! Typically the sever pain with swwallwoing only lasts a coupla few days.
You can take the antibiotic without food, but it mioght upset your stomach

Okay, heres what you can do.

Your vicodin will most likely be made up of two drugs, one will be over the counter and one will be a narcotic.

The narcotic will be codiene, Oxycodone or hydrocodone and more.

Check to see what the over the counter medication is, it is probaly either Ibprofen or Acetaminophen (tylenol). if it is Acetaminophen take Ibprofen and vis versa.

If there is only a narcotic you will be safe to take ibprofen or tylenol
