I keep hearing that there is no content currently being broadcasted at 1080p. (Direct TV, for example, sends out signals at 1080i.) The only way to get true 1080p is through a ridiculously expensive Blu-Ray machine.

Therefore many people conclude there's no real reason to get a 1080p television right now. "You won't see the difference," they say.

Anyway, at the store I did a visual comparison between 1080i/720p TVs and 1080p TVs. The source was your usual DirectTV stuff. I could have sworn that the 1080p TVs looked better -- more solid, filled-out and precise.

Is this all in my head? Do other people prefer 1080p TVs to their 1080i/720p counterparts? Theoretically we shoudn't see a difference.

Thanks, but it doesn't exactly answer the question. I was saying that I thought 1080p TVs displayed 1080i source material better than anything else. Theoretically they shouldn't. So I was wondering if other people had this impression.

A lot depend on the deinterlacer between the two TVs.
The 720p may be as crude as dropping one field (540 lines) and scaling 540 lines to 720. (better TVs will combine the two fields to create 1 720-lines frame).
Since there is scaling involved, the image may not be as sharp.

The 1080p has the ability to combine the two fields into one frame and just repeat it. So, it is pausible in a 1080p TV to show more information.

So, not all 720p TVs (or 1080p) are equal.

You're not crazy after all because most people won't be able to see the difference between 1080i and 1080p. You will need a big screen to see the difference --- 42" or larger. You don't need a Blu-Ray to see true 1080p, HD-DVD is also 1080p. The only 1080p source right now is from the HD dvds or gaming consoles.

Yes, some 1080P sets would look better even on a 1080i signal. They have more pixels than the 1080i sets

While I haven't noticed what you are saying I would think it is very much possible. Most 1080i HDTV sets don't actually display in 1080 and have to downconvert from 1080i to 720p. The newest 1080p sets have the resolution to actually display 1080 and not have to convert. Are you standing very close to the sets when you make this comparision?
