There are more churches and denominations than one, so which "church" did you have in mind? Some of it goes for upkeep, electricity, phones, etc...part goes for insurance, the pastor's salary, etc. Then some is used for outreach in the community. Some churches help those in need in a more concrete way, like paying bills for a family whose main earner is in hospital or something like that. Once when we were unemployed our congregation (Anglican) did a huge shop for us and brought it round to the house.

What church do you mean? Anglicans and Catholics support their local churches through the weekly church collection. No one is expected to give anything, and people give as much or as little as they can. They do this because their church is important to them. The Vatican is supported by Catholics through an annual collection called "Peter's Pence." This money is used for a wide variety of purposes including supporting Catholic charities. Sects and cults, such as Scientology, demand that their adherents hand over vast sums of money from their wages to pay for the brainwashing of the weak minded people that they prey upon.

Regarding the tragedy of child abuse, sadly a topic that some people see as a source for sick humour, settlements are made by the various Protestant and Catholic churches that have been affected by this. This is paid for in a variety of ways, usually through the sale of church land. This is done openly, and the faithful are kept fully informed. Thankfully this is a tragedy that most decent people hope will never happen again.

All churches regularly and quite openly declare what they are receiving from the faithful and all parishes have a Select Vestry or Parish Council that oversees where exactly the money is going. Again, this is except for cults or sects like Scientology where very, very few individual members have any idea how much money the cult has or what is being done with it.

Ask and you shall, as they say, receive!

I've found a site that might help you if you're interested in reading the latest financial audit/ report (December 2005) for the Catholic Church of England and Wales. It is comprehensive, with links to the independent auditor's report, the trustee's report and statements of account.

I believe the next audit is in progress and should be to end of December 2006, although it might be worth checking back with the website to find out how this is progressing and how soon more current audit information will be available.

For individual parishes, I know from experience that they will provide you with a statement of account for parish expenditure should you ask.

It is really quite informative and I would urge you and others who have posted on here to read, analyse (graphs provided), and understand. It's what *thinking* people do.

I think you wil find that the real estate of most mainstream churches would be far more valuable in financial terms if used for some other commercial purpose than the modest amount raised by collections from the congregation, who, by the way, are very pleased to donate and do so quite willingly.
I would much rather donate to a Christian Church than have my money purloined by a spendthrift, wasteful Government through their extortionate, compulsory taxation.
So instead of worrying about where our money goes that we give quite willingly to churches, you should be worrying about where all the money we are forced to pay by Gordon Brown, Ken Livingstone, and local councils goes. How much money is being wasted on killing people in Iraq, for example, or killing unborn babies through the multi-million pound abortion industry, the Millenium Dome, 'Two Jags' expense account, Livingstone's trip to Cuba, Blair's freebie holidays etc. etc etc.?

Our church does not recieve grants. We as the congregation pay the mortgage and the up keep of the building. Also, some of the money that we provide help people in the community both locally and abroad. For example, some of the money we pay are helping set up schools in Kenya or help provide furniture for someone locally.

The Church of England is one of the biggest land owner in the UK. It's worth millions!
The Catholic church....well look at the display of wealth from the vatican....The money goes into propaganda and sponsoring the pope to say stupid things.

I don't know about the UK or catholism, but here in the U.S it depends on the individual church.

The money goes to terrorists, drug dealers, paedophiles and world leaders like Shrub and Tory Liar, the church wants to keep its power and so pays those who they think will keep the masses in their places.

It goes to the places the givers are well aware of and happy to contribute to, e.g. mission at home and abroad, the upkeep of the buildings and staff. No one has to give to the church if they don't want to.

The money is paid out in compensation to young boys who have suffered sexual abuse from priests and clergy.
After this compensation has been paid-the coffers are empty.
